Hydraulic fracture height growth in layered rocks: Perspective from DEM simulation of different propagation regimes

Liuke Huang et al.

Summary: A study investigates the propagation of hydraulic fractures in layered rocks using 2D discrete element modeling. It finds that the stiffness and toughness ratio, as well as stress contrast, affect the height growth of the fractures. The propagation regime also plays a crucial role in the fracture propagation in layered rocks.

Multi-fracture nonuniform initiation and vertical propagation behavior in thin interbedded tight sandstone: An experimental study

Yushi Zou et al.

Summary: The multi-fracture growth behavior of thin interbedded tight sandstone in the Ordos basin was investigated through a multi-cluster fracturing experiment. The results showed that the mechanical parameters difference between sandstone and mudstone is significant. When the stress difference between layers is less than 3 MPa, the mudstone layer does not restrain the vertical growth of hydraulic fractures, and the opening of laminas or interfaces is the main mechanism causing height containment. However, when the stress difference is equal to or greater than 3 MPa and the mudstone thickness is more than 0.4, the hydraulic fracture height tends to be restrained. Increasing fluid viscosity or pumping rate can reduce filtration and facilitate hydraulic fractures penetrating through the laminas or interfaces and propagating into adjacent layers.

Hydraulic fracture propagation at weak interfaces between contrasting layers in shale using XFEM with energy-based criterion

JiaNing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel energy-based fracture propagation criterion for predicting hydraulic fractures' propagation at weak interfaces between contrasting layers. By combining theoretical and numerical methods, the influencing factors of hydraulic fractures propagation on weak interfaces are investigated, the crack paths are analyzed in detail, and the mechanism of fracture propagation is further revealed.
