Benthic foraminifera for the ecological status assessment of tourist marinas

Summary: Living benthic foraminifera were studied to assess their suitability for the quick and cost-effective evaluation of ecological quality status in tourist marinas. The accumulation of antifouling residues was found to be the main source of pollution, affecting the abundance and species composition of foraminifera. Environmental factors and metal contamination influenced the distribution of foraminifera, with the highest diversity observed at intermediate metal levels.

The Impact of MOSE (Experimental Electromechanical Module) Flood Barriers on Microphytobenthic Community of the Venice Lagoon

Summary: MOSE is a system designed to protect Venice from flooding by temporarily isolating the lagoon from the sea. Two enclosure experiments were conducted to simulate the impact of the MOSE system on microphytobenthos (MPB) assemblages. The experiments revealed that decreased hydrodynamics led to increased MPB abundances and significant changes in community composition. Combining classical taxonomy with gene metabarcoding provided a comprehensive understanding of the community potential and the ecological implications of MPB structural changes.

The SHAPE Project: An Innovative Approach to Understanding Seasonal and Diel Dissolved Oxygen Dynamics in the Marano and Grado Lagoon (Adriatic Sea) under the WFD/2000/60/CE

Summary: This study used a network of multi-parametric probes to continuously monitor dissolved oxygen (DO) in the Marano and Grado Lagoon in the northern Adriatic Sea, Italy. The results showed that DO exhibited high variability in both spatial and seasonal distribution, and was influenced by solar radiation and water temperature. In some areas with limited water renewal, DO was below the minimum requirement for aquatic life. However, inputs of freshwater discharge from inland and marine waters during tides were able to oxygenate most of the lagoon effectively.

Testing the use of the silica deposition fluorescent probe PDMPO to estimate in situ growth rates of diatoms
