Identification of Bacillus velezensis SBB and Its Antifungal Effects against Verticillium dahliae

Wei-Yu Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a soil-isolated strain Bacillus velezensis SBB was found to have efficient antagonistic effects on Verticillium dahliae, a pathogen causing Verticillium wilt diseases. It inhibited V. dahliae growth, conidia production, and melanin synthesis. Four volatile organic compounds produced by SBB completely inhibited V. dahliae. Moreover, SBB strain produced various enzymes and siderophore, and upregulated the expression of genes encoding non-volatile inhibitory metabolites.

Probiotics and competitive exclusion of pathogens in shrimp aquaculture

Hazel Knipe et al.

Summary: The review provides an overview of competitive exclusion mechanisms of shrimp probiotics based on their ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in vitro. Current methods may preferentially select for interference-based competitive mechanisms, potentially overlooking the probiotic potential of many species. Consideration of competitive strategies may improve the efficiency of probiotics in vivo in shrimp farming conditions.

Molecular Identification and Characterization of Probiotic Bacillus Species with the Ability to Control Vibrio spp. in Wild Fish Intestines and Sponges from the Vietnam Sea

Khanh Minh Chau et al.

Summary: This study characterized and compared 16 potential anti-Vibrio probiotics isolated from marine sponges and fish intestines, as well as an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin, revealing a higher antimicrobial spectrum in intestinal Vi+ due to the higher gene frequency of two antimicrobial compounds. Additionally, a three-step procedure was used to purify an anti-Vibrio bacteriocin produced by B. methylotrophicus NTBD1, identifying essential properties for promising feed additives. This research provides necessary information on the potential of probiotic Bacillus species with anti-Vibrio antimicrobial properties for sustainable aquaculture.
