Advanced research tools for fungal diversity and its impact on forest ecosystem

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: Fungi play a major role in forest ecosystems by recycling organic matter and channeling nutrients. Different fungal communities respond to plant communities and environmental parameters and impact the forest ecosystem through their intrinsic participation. Traditional methods have limited the in-depth study of fungal communities, but recent biological methods have made significant breakthroughs in observing fungal diversity and their role in forest ecosystems.

Perennial monocropping of khat decreased soil carbon and nitrogen relative to multistrata agroforestry and natural forest in southeastern Ethiopia

Mesele Negash et al.

Summary: The monocropping of cash crops is replacing native forests in the tropics, but there is no direct evidence on the impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) compared to multistrata-agroforestry-based cash cropping. This study found that multistrata-agroforestry-based cash cropping maintains most of the SOC and N stocks of converted native forests lost in conversion to cash monocropping, indicating the importance of economic incentives to prevent the loss of current stocks.

Linking Soil Microbial Diversity to Modern Agriculture Practices: A Review

Amrita Gupta et al.

Summary: In modern agriculture, practices such as extensive tillage and use of harmful agrochemicals influence soil microbial community structure and sustainability. Beneficial microorganisms have the potential to reduce agrochemical use while improving crop health and yield. Despite increasing awareness of organic food production, farmers in developing countries still rely heavily on inorganic fertilizers and toxic pesticides.

Keystone microbial taxa drive the accelerated decompositions of cellulose and lignin by long-term resource enrichments

Alin Song et al.

Summary: The decomposition of lignin and cellulose in arable soil has a significant impact on soil fertility and carbon sequestration. Long-term fertilization increases the decomposition rates and alters the key microbial populations involved. The decomposition rates of cellulose and lignin are influenced by different factors under different fertilization conditions.

Metagenomics: A Tool for Exploring Key Microbiome With the Potentials for Improving Sustainable Agriculture

Blessing Chidinma Nwachukwu et al.

Summary: This article introduces the application of metagenomic techniques in studying plant root-associated microbiota and microbial ecology. By using metagenomics, characteristics and functions of microorganisms that cannot be cultured in the laboratory can be understood. A detailed understanding of these microorganisms and their interactions will contribute to the improvement of plant growth and crop production.

Microbiota Diversity Change as Quality Indicator of Soils Exposed to Intensive Periurban Agriculture

Laura J. Raiger Iustman et al.

Summary: The study found that periurban agriculture soils in Argentina have significantly disturbed bacterial ecosystems, manifesting in changes in bacterial diversity and microbial community structure. Different bacteria abundances and diversities were observed in reference soils and periurban agriculture soils under different crop planting cycles and pesticide applications.

Diversity of microbial communities and soil nutrients in sugarcane rhizosphere soil under water soluble fertilizer

Huan Niu et al.

Summary: The application of water soluble fertilizers can alleviate soil acidity, increase soil organic matter, dissolved organic carbon, and available potassium contents, leading to improved agronomic parameters and sugarcane yield. The enrichment of beneficial symbiotic bacteria is promoted by water soluble fertilizers, enhancing soil nutrient content and ultimately impacting plant growth and crop productivity.

Variation of rhizosphere microbial community in continuous mono-maize seed production

Yunchen Zhao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the diversity and abundance of soil microbes in rhizosphere soil after continuous maize seed production, and their relationship with disease incidence. Different fungal and bacterial species were predominant in different cropping years, with long-term maize seed production impacting the structure and diversity of soil microbial communities. Continuous cropping induced a decrease in protective microbes and an increase in pathogenic pathogens, posing a risk of pathogen invasion to maize plants.

Potassium Improves Drought Stress Tolerance in Plants by Affecting Root Morphology, Root Exudates, and Microbial Diversity

Qiwen Xu et al.

Summary: Potassium (K) application can increase root length, density, and organic acids secretion, mitigating the negative effects of drought on plants. However, excessive potassium input can hinder plant growth, while an appropriate amount of potassium can promote root system morphology and physiological function improvements.

Community Analysis-based Screening of Plant Growth-promoting Bacteria for Sugar Beet

Kazuyuki Okazaki et al.

Summary: The study showed distinct differences in bacterial community structures between above-ground and below-ground tissues of sugar beet, with above-ground tissues being more tightly clustered. By analyzing 16S rRNA gene sequence data of clone libraries and isolate collections, 44 potential plant growth-promoting bacteria were identified, with eight isolates demonstrating growth-promoting effects on sugar beet seedlings in inoculation tests. Seven genera were newly identified as PGPBs for sugar beet at the genus level, extending the potential for developing novel biofertilizers.
