Shaping the subway microbiome through probiotic-based sanitation during the COVID-19 emergency: a pre-post case-control study

Maria D'Accolti et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, chemical disinfectants were widely used to clean public transportation environments like subways, but they have temporary action and high environmental impact. A recent study showed that a probiotic-based sanitation procedure can effectively control pathogens and antimicrobial resistance spread, including against SARS-CoV-2. This study assessed the impact of this biological sanitation approach compared to chemical disinfectants on the subway microbiome, and found that the probiotic-based sanitation significantly reduced bacterial and fungal pathogens as well as presence of SARS-CoV-2.

Microbiological Control in Decontamination of Sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plant

Boyka Z. Malcheva et al.

Summary: The dynamics of microbiological indicators in fresh sludge from wastewater treatment plants were studied under different concentrations of CaO and ash, and treated with quicklime, ash, and microbial fertilizer for composting. The study observed the influence of temperature, water content, and oxygen on the development of microbes in laboratory conditions. The results showed that adding 20% quicklime and 50% ash achieved the best decontamination effect on the sludge.

Virus contamination and infectivity in beach environment: Focus on sand and stranded material

Annalaura Carducci et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of viruses in seawater, sand, and beach-stranded material, and found that 13.6% of the environmental samples contained viral genome, but they were not infectious. Norovirus and SARS-CoV-2 were not detected. The study suggests that HAdV can be used as an indicator pathogen for beach monitoring and risk assessment.

Microbial Source Tracking as a Method of Determination of Beach Sand Contamination

Elisabete Valerio et al.

Summary: Beach sand can serve as a reservoir for various microorganisms, including enteric pathogens. A study conducted on a beach in Terceira Island, Portugal, demonstrated the usefulness of microbial source tracking in identifying the sources of fecal contamination and implementing appropriate measures. This study highlights the importance of holistic management of beaches.

Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Micrococcus luteus Bloodstream Infection in a Chinese Tertiary-Care Hospital

Minghui Zhu et al.

Summary: M. luteus BSI mainly occurs in immunocompromised patients or those with prior invasive surgeries or indwelling catheters, and shows less responsiveness to erythromycin. Cephalosporins and quinolones are effective empirical antibiotics for treating M. luteus BSI. Vancomycin and teicoplanin should be considered for potentially broadly drug-resistant M. luteus strains.

The Biocontrol and Plant Growth-Promoting Properties of Streptomyces alfalfae XN-04 Revealed by Functional and Genomic Analysis

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: An actinomycete, identified as Streptomyces alfalfae XN-04, was isolated from rhizosphere soil with high inhibitory activity against cotton Fusarium wilt disease. Genome mining and metabolites detection revealed the biocontrol and plant growth-promoting properties of XN-04, which included the production of various extracellular enzymes and antifungal metabolites. This study suggests that S. alfalfae XN-04 could serve as a multifunctional biocontrol agent and biofertilizer in agriculture.
