Isolation of a Novel Recombinant Canine Coronavirus From a Visitor to Haiti: Further Evidence of Transmission of Coronaviruses of Zoonotic Origin to Humans

John A. Lednicky et al.

Summary: A novel coronavirus was isolated from a medical team member who had traveled to Haiti and developed fever and malaise. The virus showed a 99.4% similarity with a recombinant canine coronavirus recently found in a pneumonia patient in Malaysia, indicating the occurrence of infection with this virus and/or recombinant variants in multiple locations.

Phylogeography and evolutionary dynamics analysis of porcine delta-coronavirus with host expansion to humans

Gen Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the origin and transmission of Porcine Delta Coronavirus (PDCoV) and identified significant mutation sites. The research suggests that PDCoV might originate in Asia and has the potential for cross-species transmission. The findings are significant for understanding the zoonotic potential of PDCoV and enhancing biosecurity precautions.

Making genomic surveillance deliver: A lineage classification and nomenclature system to inform rabies elimination

Kathryn Campbell et al.

Summary: The availability of pathogen sequence data and the use of genomic surveillance are increasing rapidly. In this study, the researchers propose an updated genomic tool and classification system for better understanding the dynamics of rabies virus and improving disease control. By implementing this tool, they were able to define 96 total lineages within the globally distributed Cosmopolitan Glade of rabies virus, which is a significant increase from the previously reported 22 lineages. The integration of this tool with a new rabies virus sequence data resource enables rapid application and provides insights into the control and elimination of dog-mediated rabies.

Structure of trimeric pre-fusion rabies virus glycoprotein in complex with two protective antibodies

Weng M. Ng et al.

Summary: In this study, the pre-fusion conformation of the rabies virus glycoprotein (RABV-G) and its complex structure with two neutralizing and protective antibodies were determined. One of the antibodies is a licensed prophylactic, which stabilizes the protein in the pre-fusion conformation. These findings are crucial for vaccine design and the development of prophylactic antibodies.

Relax, Keep Walking - A Practical Guide to Continuous Phylogeographic Inference with BEAST

Simon Dellicour et al.

Summary: Spatially explicit phylogeographic analyses can be conducted using a framework that employs relaxed random walks to reconstruct phylogenetic dispersal histories in continuous space. This approach, introduced 10 years ago, has provided new opportunities in the field of phylodynamics for mapping and analyzing the spatial dissemination of rapidly evolving pathogens. The authors provide a detailed guide on setting up, running, and interpreting continuous phylogeographic analyses using specific programs.

On the Use of Phylogeographic Inference to Infer the Dispersal History of Rabies Virus: A Review Study

Kanika D. Nahata et al.

Summary: Rabies, caused by Lyssavirus, is a neglected zoonotic disease that is almost always fatal in non-vaccinated humans and still leads to an estimated 59,000 deaths annually. Recent years have seen an increased use of phylogeographic and phylodynamic analyses to study the evolution and spread of rabies virus. Environmental factors play a key role in the spread of rabies virus, but there is a knowledge gap in fully exploiting available data for analysis. Exciting methodological developments have yet to be applied in phylogeographic and phylodynamic analyses of rabies virus.
