Whole-Genome Sequencing of Lactobacillus johnsonii MT4, a Novel Strain Isolated from the Oral Cavity of C57BL/6 Mice

Roberto Vazquez-Munoz et al.

Summary: Lactobacillus johnsonii strain MT4, isolated from the oral cavity of C57BL/6 mice, exhibits antimicrobial activity against disease-associated microorganisms. The whole genome sequencing revealed a single genome of 1,883,026 bp with a GC content of 34.4%, and no plasmids.

Insights From the Lactobacillus johnsonii Genome Suggest the Production of Metabolites With Antibiofilm Activity Against the Pathobiont Candida albicans

Roberto Vazquez-Munoz et al.

Summary: In this study, the interactions between Lactobacillus johnsonii and Candida albicans were investigated. The results showed that L. johnsonii exhibited inhibitory effects on C. albicans growth, both in planktonic and biofilm states. These effects were influenced by pH and nutrient availability, and could be attributed to the production of soluble metabolites with anticandidal activity.

Human gut bifidobacteria inhibit the growth of the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans

Liviana Ricci et al.

Summary: This study found variations in the ability of gut microbiota to inhibit the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Bifidobacteria and their fermentation acids were identified as important components in inhibitory gut microbiota. The findings provide insights into the potential mechanisms of gut microbiome-mediated colonization resistance against Candida albicans and suggest bifidobacteria and fermentation acids as targets for further study.

Oral Administration of Lactobacillus helveticus LA401 and Lactobacillus gasseri LA806 Combination Attenuates Oesophageal and Gastrointestinal Candidiasis and Consequent Gut Inflammation in Mice

Helene Authier et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the combination of Lactobacillus gasseri LA806 and Lactobacillus helveticus LA401 can effectively reduce colonization of Candida albicans in the esophagus and GI tract of mice, while also modulating gut microbiota and decreasing inflammation and oxidative stress in the colon. This probiotic combination also induces fungicidal functions in macrophages, making it a promising strategy for managing GI candidiasis and associated inflammation.

Mucosal Bacteria Modulate Candida albicans Virulence in Oropharyngeal Candidiasis

M. Bertolini et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sucrose intake can alter the composition of oral mucosal bacteria, reducing the virulence of C. albicans by increasing the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. In immunocompromised mice, C. albicans infection was associated with reduced bacterial alpha diversity.

Anticandidal Activities by Lactobacillus Species: An Update on Mechanisms of Action

Roberto Vazquez-Munoz et al.

Summary: Lactobacilli, as probiotics, can provide various benefits to the host, including antifungal effects that can help prevent Candida infections. The mechanisms of action of Lactobacillus spp. against Candida remain largely unexplored, and this work aims to comprehensively review and update current knowledge on these mechanisms.
