First line treatment selection modifies disease course and long-term clinical outcomes in Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease

Kiyoharu Fukushima et al.

Summary: The standard regimen of rifamycin + ethambutol + macrolides proves to have superior outcomes in treating MAC-PD patients, while alternative regimens may lead to sputum non-conversion, treatment failure, and emergence of clarithromycin resistance. Various factors such as older age, male gender, comorbidities, and certain laboratory markers were found to be associated with mortality risk in these patients.
