Temporal trends in sperm count: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis of samples collected globally in the 20th and 21st centuries

Hagai Levine et al.

Summary: This study reveals a significant decline in sperm count among men from all continents, with a more pronounced decrease observed post-2000. The decline in sperm count is not limited to North America-Europe-Australia, but also seen in South/Central America-Asia-Africa. Urgent research and action are needed to investigate the causes and prevent further disruption of male reproductive health.

Metabolic enzyme gene polymorphisms predict the effects of antioxidant treatment on idiopathic male infertility

Hong-Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between genetic polymorphisms of metabolic enzymes and idiopathic male infertility, and observed the efficacy of antioxidant therapy in these patients. The results showed that GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene deletions were more common in idiopathic male infertility, and these patients had lower sperm quality and higher oxidative damage levels. However, antioxidant therapy was not effective in male infertility patients with GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene deletions.

Diet and Male Fertility: The Impact of Nutrients and Antioxidants on Sperm Energetic Metabolism

Alessandra Ferramosca et al.

Summary: Diet plays a role in male reproductive potential, but the specific biochemical mechanisms are not well understood. Certain nutrients have effects on sperm quality and are involved in biochemical mechanisms related to sperm bioenergetics. Polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-3 fatty acids, improve sperm quality, while saturated fatty acids have a negative impact. Carbohydrates and proteins also influence sperm mitochondrial function and oxidative stress. Natural polyphenols have varying effects on mitochondrial function.

Sperm as a Carrier of Genome Instability in Relation to Paternal Lifestyle and Nutritional Conditions

Usha Punjabi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of lifestyle factors on genome instability in men with and without subfertility. The results showed that age, BMI, physical activity, and smoking negatively affected semen quality, while alcohol abuse and drug abuse had different effects on chromatin structure and DNA fragmentation. Genome instability was more pronounced in the subfertile population, but the proportion of men with lifestyle risk factors was the same in both groups. Further research is needed to determine the potential benefits of nutritional supplementation for male fertility.

Effects of antioxidant co-supplementation therapy on spermatogenesis dysfunction in relation to the basal oxidation-reduction potential levels in spermatozoa: A pilot study

Kazumitsu Yamasaki et al.

Summary: This pilot study compared the effects of antioxidant co-supplementation therapy and methylcobalamin therapy on patients with impaired semen quality. The results showed that both therapies increased sperm concentration in patients with elevated basal ORP levels in their semen.

Male infertility

Ashok Agarwal et al.

Summary: Infertility affects 8-12% of couples globally, with male factors contributing to around 50%. The causes of male infertility are diverse, requiring thorough evaluation to identify treatable or reversible factors. Semen analysis is key for evaluation, while advanced tests have been developed to investigate sperm quality and function.

Oxidation of Sperm DNA and Male Infertility

Leila Rashki Ghaleno et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is a major cause of male infertility due to its destructive effects on sperm structures and functions. Sperm DNA is highly susceptible to oxidative damage, particularly leading to single- or double-strand DNA breaks, which is a significant issue in male infertility. While methods to detect sperm DNA fragmentation have become important diagnostic tools, there is still no clear consensus on their prognostic value.

Redox Balance in Male Infertility: Excellence through Moderation-Mετρον αριστον

Evangelos N. Symeonidis et al.

Summary: Male infertility is a common medical condition affecting approximately 15% of couples globally, with an estimated 190 million people struggling with it. Urologists face a wide range of male infertility conditions, from typical cases to more complex ones, with oxidative stress being a critical component entailing an imbalance between ROS and antioxidants. The antioxidant paradox poses one of the biggest challenges in andrology, with the emergence of new tools like the MiOXSYS (R) assay offering a quantification of OS and potential solutions for maintaining redox balance.
