The Impact of Ellagitannins and Their Metabolites through Gut Microbiome on the Gut Health and Brain Wellness within the Gut-Brain Axis

Roxana Banc et al.

Summary: Ellagitannins (ETs), found in plant-source foods, have been associated with positive effects on various pathologies. However, their limited bioavailability hinders their systemic circulation, while urolithins, ET metabolites, are better absorbed and may be responsible for the bioactive effects. This review examines the dietary sources, metabolism, and bioavailability of ETs, as well as the recent findings on their activities, potential mechanisms, and the connection with the gut-brain axis. Current studies suggest that ET-rich foods, gut microbiomes, or urolithin types can modulate signaling pathways and promote beneficial health effects.

Proanthocyanidins may be potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of carotid atherosclerosis: A review

Pan Huang

Summary: Atherosclerotic cerebrovascular disease is a major cause of death in China and has significant impacts on disability and societal burdens. There is a need for the development of effective therapeutic drugs for this disease. Proanthocyanidins, a type of naturally occurring active substance, have been shown to have strong potential for anti-atherosclerosis activity. This review paper examines the published evidence regarding the anti-atherosclerotic effects of proanthocyanidins in various atherosclerotic research models.

A Review on Berry Seeds-A Special Emphasis on Their Chemical Content and Health-Promoting Properties

Natalia Slawinska et al.

Summary: Berries are valued for their nutrients and active compounds, and their seeds are important objects of scientific investigation. They can have higher concentrations of certain phytochemicals and can be reused in the food industry to make oil, extracts, or flour. Preparations from berry seeds are valuable sources of bioactive phytochemicals and can be used as functional foods or for pharmaceutical and cosmetic purposes.

Modulation of the oral glucocorticoid system during black raspberry mediated oral cancer chemoprevention

Divya Nedungadi et al.

Summary: Recent reports have highlighted the significance of glucocorticoids synthesized in the oral mucosa in cancer development. This study investigates the role of the oral glucocorticoid system in oral cancer, and explores the effect of black raspberry administration on glucocorticoid modulation during oral cancer chemoprevention. The findings demonstrate the downregulation of HSD11B2, an enzyme that inactivates cortisol, during oral carcinogenesis, and show that black raspberry administration can upregulate HSD11B2 expression and reduce active glucocorticoid levels in oral cancer cells.

Role of ERK Pathway in the Pathogenesis of Atopic Dermatitis and Its Potential as a Therapeutic Target

Nahoko Zeze et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a skin disorder characterized by inflammation, barrier disruption, and intense itch. This study investigates the involvement of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. The results suggest that the ERK pathway plays a role in the development of atopic dermatitis and may be a potential therapeutic target.

Guidelines for mouse and human DC generation

Manfred B. Lutz et al.

Summary: This article is part of a series of guidelines on dendritic cells, providing advanced protocols for the preparation and characterization of murine and human dendritic cells. The protocols cover the preparation and generation of dendritic cells from different cellular sources, including the generation of different subsets such as cDC1, cDC2, and pDC using Flt3L in mice, and the generation of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells using GM-CSF. For human dendritic cells, the protocols focus on the culture of CD34(+) cells on OP9 cell layers to generate different subsets, as well as the generation of dendritic cells from peripheral blood monocytes. The article has been peer-reviewed and approved by the co-authors, making it an essential resource for basic and clinical dendritic cell immunologists.

BRAF and MEK Inhibitors Affect Dendritic-Cell Maturation and T-Cell Stimulation

Stefanie Hoyer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of BRAFi/MEKi on the maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and their interaction with T cells. The findings showed that these inhibitors altered cytokine secretion and surface marker expression of DCs, leading to lower activation markers and cytokine secretion in T cells during antigen-specific stimulation。
