Tatsiana Shulha et al.

Summary: This study reports the possibility of directly synthesizing layered double hydroxide (LDH) on AZ91 surface in the presence of chelating agent DTPA. The obtained LDH was characterized using experimental and computational methods, and a comparison of three possible LDHs was performed. The results confirmed the growth of mixed LDH-OH/CO3 on the surface in the presence of DTPA pentasodium salt.

Antibacterial activity of bioceramic coatings on Mg and its alloys created by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO): A review

Arash Fattah-alhosseini et al.

Summary: Mg and its alloys are suitable choices for implant materials due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility features. However, the high electrochemical activity of these materials results in fast degradation and severe corrosion. The use of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) surface modification technique can enhance the antibacterial activity of Mg and its alloys while maintaining their corrosion protection properties.

Corrosion, Wear, and Antibacterial Behaviors of Hydroxyapatite/MgO Composite PEO Coatings on AZ31 Mg Alloy by Incorporation of TiO2 Nanoparticles

Hanane Mozafarnia et al.

Summary: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a promising surface treatment that can generate thick and corrosion-resistant coatings on valve metals. In this study, PEO was used to modify the surface of AZ31 Mg alloy by incorporating titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NPs) into a phosphate-based electrolyte. The composite coatings showed improved porosity, thickness, roughness, and wettability. The coatings exhibited superior corrosion resistance in simulated body fluid (SBF) and demonstrated good wear and antibacterial properties.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are attractive as biodegradable materials in biomedicine due to their excellent biocompatibility. However, their rapid corrosion and hydrogen gas generation hinder their application. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings have been found to improve the erosion resistance and biocompatibility of magnesium alloys.

Summary: The present work investigated the impact of different anions on the incorporation of WO3 nanoparticles into the MgO layer during the plasma electrolytic oxidation of AZ31 Mg alloy. The type of anion added into the electrolyte influenced the microstructural features, coating thickness, and corrosion resistance of the samples. The coating produced in the presence of silicate anions exhibited the best corrosion resistance.

Mosab Kaseem et al.

Summary: The present study successfully fabricated stable smart coatings on AZ31 Mg alloy by decorating layered double hydroxide film with protein molecules functionalized by n-type semi-conductor nanoparticles. This coating was found to significantly enhance the anticorrosion properties by increasing barrier to diffusion, preventing charge transport, and utilizing the large surface area of the LDH film for dopant liberation.

Superior corrosion protection and adhesion strength of epoxy coating applied on AZ31 magnesium alloy pre-treated by PEO/Silane with inorganic and organic corrosion inhibitors

M. Toorani et al.

Summary: The study found that adding 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) organic inhibitor to the PEO/Silane/Epoxy coating system provides optimal corrosion protection properties. The formation of Ce(OH)(3) in the PEO coating structure and the complex chelate of Mg(HQ)(2) in the silane layer lead to the active corrosion protection properties in the coating system.
