Further predictive value of lymphovascular invasion explored via supervised deep learning for lymph node metastases in breast cancer

Jiamei Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical significance of lymph-blood vessel invasion (LBVI) in 685 cases of breast invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) and explored the predictive value of LBVI on lymph node metastases (LNM) using a deep learning (DL) model. The results showed that LBVI was a significant risk factor for LNM, and DL could assist in quantifying LBVI and providing additional prognostic information.

Next-Generation Morphometry for pathomics-data mining in histopathology

David L. Hoelscher et al.

Summary: Pathology diagnostics still rely on tissue morphology assessment by trained experts. Here, the authors perform deep-learning-based segmentation followed by large-scale feature extraction of histological images, i.e., next-generation morphometry, to enable outcome-relevant and disease-specific pathomics analysis of non-tumor kidney pathology.

Blood Vessel Detection Algorithm for Tissue Engineering and Quantitative Histology

A. Adamo et al.

Summary: Immunohistochemistry for vascular network analysis plays a fundamental role in basic science, translational research, and clinical practice. However, manual identification of vascularization in histological tissue images is time-consuming and operator-dependent. In this study, an automatic algorithm (BVD) was developed for quantitative analysis of blood vessels in immunohistochemical images. The algorithm demonstrated robustness and versatility in quantifying number, area, and spatial distribution of blood vessels across different datasets.

Lymphatic Endothelial Markers and Tumor Lymphangiogenesis Assessment in Human Breast Cancer

Jia-Mei Chen et al.

Summary: Metastasis via lymphatic or blood vessels is the leading cause of death for breast cancer. However, the research progress for tumor lymphangiogenesis has lagged behind that for angiogenesis due to the lack of specific markers. With the discovery of lymphatic endothelial cell (LEC) markers, it has been shown that LEC plays an active role in various processes related to lymphatic formation, tumor growth, invasion, and antitumor immunity.

Unsupervised machine learning for identifying important visual features through bag-of-words using histopathology data from chronic kidney disease

Joonsang Lee et al.

Summary: Pathologists use visual classification to assess kidney biopsy samples, but current methods lack reproducibility. To overcome this, we developed an unsupervised bag-of-words model and successfully predicted kidney function levels in chronic kidney disease patients. Our study ranked important morphological features as diagnostic markers for kidney disease.

Development and evaluation of deep learning-based segmentation of histologic structures in the kidney cortex with multiple histologic stains

Catherine P. Jayapandian et al.

Summary: The application of deep learning for automated segmentation of histologic structures from kidney biopsies and nephrectomies showed that Periodic Acid Schiff-stained whole slide images yielded the best concordance between pathologists and deep learning segmentation. Silver stained whole slide images yielded the worst deep learning performance. This study represents the largest adaptation of deep learning for the segmentation of kidney histologic structures across multiple stains and pathology laboratories.

Alton B. Farris et al.

Summary: Whole slide imaging (WSI) is an important technique in digital pathology, leading to increased interest in image analysis (IA) techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI) and hypothesis-driven algorithms. Renal pathology, particularly in renal transplant pathology, has seen a rise in research using AI/machine learning for identification of features such as glomeruli. Deep learning methods like artificial neural networks (ANNs)/ convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are commonly employed for analyzing 'big data' in pathology WSIs.
