Transient gas pipeline flow: analytical examples, numerical simulation and a comparison to the quasi-static approach

Martin Gugat et al.

Summary: This paper presents the modeling of high-pressure gas pipeline flow using semilinear hyperbolic partial differential equations. A number of analytical solutions are provided to discuss the necessity of using PDE models to handle certain dynamic situations in gas transportation networks. It is shown that appropriate numerical discretizations can accurately capture the dynamical behavior, and examples are presented to demonstrate that an optimization approach based on steady states may not converge to the optimal state in certain cases.

Operation of Natural Gas Pipeline Networks With Storage Under Transient Flow Conditions

Sai Krishna Kanth Hari et al.

Summary: This study formulates a nonlinear optimal control problem for the intraday operation of a natural gas pipeline network, considering dynamics of compressible gas flow through pipes, compressors, reservoirs, and wells. The governing equations for all network components are assembled into a single nonlinear differential-algebraic equation system. By maximizing an objective function and fulfilling flow equations and inequalities, the methodology aims to enhance economic profit and network efficiency.

Optimal coordinated operation of integrated natural gas and electric power systems: A review of modeling and solution methods

Enrica Raheli et al.

Summary: The integration of different energy systems is a promising solution to accommodate the rising share of renewable energy sources. Optimal operation of integrated electrical-gas systems can lead to lower operating costs and higher utilization of renewables. Various solution approaches, including linearization and decentralized optimization schemes, are discussed to tackle the challenges of co-optimization.
