Routine use of antibiotic-laden bone cement in total knee arthroplasty is a cost-effective practice in the single-payer healthcare system

Hassaan Abdel Khalik et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of antibiotic-laden bone cement (ALBC) in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) from the perspective of a single-payer healthcare system. Through a cost-utility analysis, it was found that TKA with ALBC was more cost-effective compared to TKA with regular bone cement (RBC). The use of ALBC remained cost-effective even with a 50% increase in cost, but its cost-effectiveness declined if the rate of postoperative joint infection (PJI) increased or the rate of PJI following RBC use decreased.

Treatment methods toward improving the anti-infection ability of poly (etheretherketone) implants for medical applications

Shuqi Zhang et al.

Summary: Poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) is a promising material for repairing bone and dental hard tissue defects due to its chemical stability, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties. However, it has disadvantages such as biological and chemical inertness, which affect the integration of implants and bonding strength of prostheses. This review explores methods to improve PEEK's antibacterial and immunomodulatory abilities, addressing limitations, future challenges, and required research efforts.

Bioinspired Modifications of PEEK Implants for Bone Tissue Engineering

Xinming Gu et al.

Summary: PEEK has been increasingly used as an implant material due to its biocompatibility, chemical stability, and elastic modulus similar to natural bone, but suffers from poor integration with surrounding bone tissue. Various strategies for functionalizing the surface and changing the structure of PEEK have been proposed to improve its bioactivity. Inspired by bone tissue, this review explores ways to enhance the biocompatibility of PEEK implants and suggests directions for future multifunctional implant fabrication.

Tribological, cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties of graphene oxide/ carbon fibers/polyetheretherketone composite coatings on Ti-6Al-4V alloy as orthopedic/dental implants

Wen Qin et al.

Summary: In this work, graphene oxide/carbon fibers/polyetheretherketone (GO/CF/PEEK) composite coatings were fabricated on Ti-6Al-4V alloy to improve wear resistance, cytocompatibility, and antibacterial properties for orthopedic/dental implants. The coatings significantly decreased the coefficient of friction, enhanced wear resistance, exhibited good cytocompatibility, and showed excellent suppression toward Staphylococcus aureus due to the antibacterial nature of graphene oxide. Therefore, the composite coated Ti-6Al-4V alloy could be a promising material for bone tissue engineering in orthopedic/dental applications.
