Velocity and Direction Adjustment of Actuated Droplets Using the Standing Wave Ratio of Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW)

Huijuan Dong et al.

Summary: This article discusses the use of surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology in lab-on-a-chip applications for droplet actuation. By adjusting the excitation phase shift, theta, of interdigital transducers (IDTs), the velocity and direction of microdroplets can be controlled. The authors present the equation for the vibration of mixed traveling surface acoustic waves (TSAWs) and standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs) formed on the substrate surface operating in the exciter-exciter mode. They derive an analytical expression for the acoustic standing wave ratio as a function of theta and the spatial phase difference. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of the exciter-exciter mode in increasing the velocity of actuated droplets compared to the traditional exciter-absorber mode.

Swarming magnetic photonic-crystal microrobots with on-the-fly visual pH detection and self-regulated drug delivery

Zheng Yu et al.

Summary: In this article, swarming magnetic photonic-crystal microrobots capable of on-the-fly visual pH detection and self-regulated drug delivery are demonstrated. The microrobots self-organize into large swarms and can perceive local pH changes through their structural colors. When approaching targets with abnormal pH conditions, they can visualize the changes and release drugs accordingly. This work facilitates the development of intelligent micro/nanorobots for active motile-targeting tumor diagnosis and treatment.

A Micro-3-Degree-of-Freedom Force Sensor for Intraocular Dexterous Surgical Robots

He Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a micro-3-degree of freedom (DOF) force sensor is proposed to improve the flexibility of the intraocular robot during retinal surgery. The sensor, embedded in a nitinol tube with flexible hinges, integrates force sensing and injection functions. A new fiber Bragg grating (FBG) configuration method and linear decoupling algorithm are proposed. Static calibration experiments demonstrate excellent resolution of the force sensor. The feasibility and effectiveness of the developed sensor for monitoring the interaction forces during retinal vein cannulation (RVC) are further confirmed through an ex vivo experiment on pig cadaver eyes.

Trimer-like microrobots with multimodal locomotion and reconfigurable capabilities

S. Yu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a magnetic trimer-like microrobot composed of three magnetic Janus colloids with different diameters, which exhibits multimodal locomotion, reconfigurability, and contactless manipulation. The locomotion modes can be achieved by adjusting the magnetic field, enabling the microrobot to move in a 3D space and on a surface. Rapid reconfiguration of the microrobot from one mode to another can be achieved by changing the frequency and strength of the magnetic field.
