Tough PEGgels by In Situ Phase Separation for 4D Printing

Summary: In this study, a simple and efficient method is developed for the fabrication of tough polymer gels by polymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in a mixture of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The resulting phase-separated gel demonstrates high strength, favorable fracture strain, and large toughness. Furthermore, the gel exhibits shape memory properties. The combination of tunable tough PEG gels with 3D printing and shape memory abilities shows the potential of PEG gels for 4D printing.

Stereolithography of Semiconductor Silver and Acrylic-Based Nanocomposites

Summary: Polymer nanocomposites have great potential in various fields, especially electrically conductive and semiconductor materials, which are attracting attention for biomedical, optoelectronic, and sensing applications. By using metallic nanoparticles as nanoadditives, researchers have successfully increased the electrical conductivity of acrylic resin nanocomposites. They have also developed a method to enhance the density of silver nanoparticles by using different solvents, leading to improved electrical behavior. The fabricated nanocomposites with high density of silver nanoparticles show significant increase in electrical conductivity, reaching the semiconductor regime. The use of auxiliary solvents during the printing process affects the mechanical properties and degree of cure of the nanocomposites. These nanocomposites prepared by this method hold promise for electronic applications.

Improved mechanical properties of SiC fiber reinforced silica-based ceramic cores fabricated by stereolithography

Summary: In this study, silica-based ceramics with SiC fiber addition were prepared via stereolithography, and the influence of SiC fiber content on mechanical properties was investigated. With the increase of SiC fiber content, linear shrinkage gradually decreased, while room temperature and high temperature flexural strength first increased and then decreased. Addition of 4.0 wt% SiC fiber resulted in improved mechanical properties, making it suitable for the rapid manufacturing of hollow blades.

Gold ablation had lower productivity compared to platinum, but alloying gold with 10% platinum improved productivity to nearly the same level as pure platinum.
