Heat transfer and melt flow of keyhole, transition and conduction modes in laser beam oscillating welding

Wenchao Ke et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the significant effects of melting modes on heat transfer and fluid flow in laser beam oscillating welding (LBOW), and their influence on welding quality and solidification microstructure. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is developed to study LBOW of 2219 aluminum alloy under different welding modes. The results show that the melting mode changes from keyhole to conduction mode with increasing oscillating frequency. Our work provides a foundation for optimizing the LBOW process to achieve sound joints.

Grain size effect on the temperature-dependence of elastic modulus of nanocrystalline NiTi

Kangjie Chu et al.

Summary: The effect of grain size on temperature-dependent elastic modulus (TDEM) of polycrystalline NiTi was investigated. It was found that the TDEM decreased rapidly with smaller grain size. In-situ neutron diffraction and molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the reduction in grain size led to an increase in the volume fraction and thermal stability of the austenite phase at low temperature, resulting in two-phase coexistence during cooling. The compensation of the intrinsic opposite TDEM of austenite and martensite contributed to the overall reduced TDEM in nanocrystalline NiTi. This study suggests that the TDEM of shape memory alloy can be controlled by grain size.

Role of Pd interlayer on NiTi to Ti6Al4V laser welded joints: Microstructural evolution and strengthening mechanisms

Fissha Biruke Teshome et al.

Summary: Obtaining a reliable NiTi to Ti6Al4V dissimilar joint with NiTi's superelasticity can provide design flexibility in aerospace and biomedical fields. Adding Pd can limit the formation of Ti2Ni intermetallic compounds, resulting in improved mechanical properties and superelastic behavior of the NiTi-Ti6Al4V joint. The presence of Pd also leads to a decrease in the fraction of Ti2Ni and the dominance of Ti-Pd and NiTi compounds in the fusion zone.

Dynamic vapor and keyhole behavior, and equiaxed dendrite formation in blue laser processing of copper

Dongsheng Wu et al.

Summary: By developing a coupled Cu vapor and keyhole numerical model with virtual mesh refinement, the vapor and keyhole behavior in blue laser processing of copper material was investigated. EBSD was used to measure the crystal structure of the fusion zone. Cu vapor mainly flowed upwards above the keyhole, while some downward flows were observed inside the keyhole. The melt at the keyhole wall flowed downwards due to recoil force and Marangoni stress, and the melt at the pool edge flowed outwards due to Marangoni stress.

Wenyong Zhao et al.

Summary: The effect of external magnetic field (EMF) on the behavior of heat transfer and fluid flow in aluminum alloy fabrication process has been investigated. The study found that a moderate magnetic flux density of EMF can compress the arc plasma, decrease the average temperature of droplet metal, enhance the peak velocity of plasma, and expand the high-velocity plasma zone. The EMF also reduces the dimensions of the molten pool in the early stages of welding and significantly changes the flow pattern of liquid metal in the pool.

Multi-physical modelling of alloy element transportation in wire arc additive manufacturing of a ?-TiAl alloy*

Jianwen Xin et al.

Summary: This research discusses the challenging issue of obtaining homogeneous element distribution in wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of gamma-TiAl alloys, with a focus on the influence of wire transfer. A multi-physical numerical model is developed to consider dissimilar wire feeding and melting, as well as element mixing. High-speed video camera observations reveal that the transfer of Ti and Al elements to the molten pool is facilitated by a liquid TiAl bridge, but the stability of this bridge is not optimal, leading to potential breakup between the Al wire and liquid TiAl bridge. The wetting ability of the liquid TiAl metal on the Ti wire surface can serve as a predictor for bridge breakup, and surface tension hinders droplet transfer.
