Decoding of Multiple Wrist and Hand Movements Using a Transient EMG Classifier

Daniele D'Accolti et al.

Summary: The design of prosthetic controllers using neurophysiological signals remains a significant challenge for bioengineers. Existing electromyographic (EMG) continuous pattern recognition controllers rely on assumptions of stable EMG patterns, which we challenge. We propose an algorithm that decodes wrist and hand movements based on transient EMG signals. Our offline evaluations show promising results with non-amputees achieving a median accuracy of around 96%, while amputees achieved a median accuracy of around 89%. Further assessments with domain-adaptation strategies may be needed for amputees. Overall, our results support the hypothesis that decoding transient EMG signals can be a viable pattern recognition strategy for prosthetic controllers.

Neurostimulation Perception Obeys StrengthDuration Curves and is Primarily Driven by Pulse Amplitude

Eric J. Earley et al.

Summary: Peripheral nerve stimulation is a promising technique for providing sensory feedback to prosthetic limbs. This study demonstrates that stimulation perception follows the strength-duration curve model and is consistent over time. The results suggest that stimulation amplitude primarily drives discrimination for modulating sensory feedback.

Extra-neural signals from severed nerves enable intrinsic hand movements in transhumeral amputations

Bahareh Ahkami et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using non-penetrating neural electrodes to decode intrinsic hand and finger movements in individuals with above-elbow amputations. The findings suggest that information recorded with extra-neural electrodes alone is sufficient to decode phantom hand and individual finger movements.

Neurostimulation artifact removal for implantable sensors improves signal clarity and decoding of motor volition

Eric J. Earley et al.

Summary: Recent advances in myoelectric pattern recognition and implanted sensors have proven advantageous for prosthetic limbs with reliable and multi-functional control. This study implements two real-time stimulation artifact removal algorithms, which significantly improve signal-to-noise ratio and offline pattern recognition accuracy while enhancing real-time decoding of motor intention during active neurostimulation.

Stable, simultaneous and proportional 4-DoF prosthetic hand control via synergy-inspired linear interpolation: a case series

Platon Lukyanenko et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new prosthetic hand controller combining linear interpolation, muscle synergy framework, and sufficient ciEMG channels which allows stable, intuitive, proportional, and continuous control in high Degrees-of-Freedom. Experiment results show that the controller can maintain stability for up to ten months in 3-DoF and nine months in 4-DoF without the need for retraining or at-home practice.
