Measurements of Phase Dynamics in Planar Josephson Junctions and SQUIDs

D. Z. Haxell et al.

Summary: We experimentally investigate the stochastic phase dynamics of planar Josephson junctions (JJs) and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) defined in epitaxial InAs/Al heterostructures, and characterized by a large ratio of Josephson energy to charging energy. We observe a crossover from a regime of macroscopic quantum tunneling to one of phase diffusion as a function of temperature, where the transition temperature T* is gate-tunable.

Control of Andreev Bound States Using Superconducting Phase Texture

Abhishek Banerjee et al.

Summary: Opposite phase-inversion asymmetries are observed in local tunneling spectra at the two ends of a superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor planar Josephson junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The nonlocal spectra, however, remain phase symmetric. The experimental results agree with a theoretical model, which provides a physical explanation for the localization and control of Andreev bound states in the junction.

Linking simulated polycrystalline thin film microstructures to physical vapor deposition conditions

Joseph M. Monti et al.

Summary: We propose a generalized multi-phase-field model for predicting the growth of polycrystalline thin films fabricated by physical vapor deposition. This model considers the explicit transport of atomic species to the substrate and the competing diffusion processes on the surface and in the bulk of the film, leading to the formation of films with specific microstructures. Using Monte Carlo simulations with the SiMTRA code, we calculate the energy and direction of arriving atoms at the substrate under magnetron sputtering conditions. Our simulation results agree with the transmission electron microscopy characterization of sputtered films and provide insights into the complex relationships between deposition conditions and bulk and surface morphologies.

InAs/MoRe Hybrid Semiconductor/Superconductor Nanowire Devices

Bilal Kousar et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of devices consisting of InAs nanowires in electrical contact with MoRe superconducting alloys was investigated. The MoRe thin films exhibited high transition temperatures and critical magnetic fields, and the devices maintained superconductivity at temperatures up to around 10 K. The MoRe-based Josephson devices showed supercurrents and multiple Andreev reflections. Additionally, the induced superconducting gap was found to be lower than expected and exhibited gap softening at finite magnetic fields.

Andreev Reflection in the Fractional Quantum Hall State

Onder Gul et al.

Summary: Researchers have successfully constructed graphene-based van der Waals devices with narrow superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) electrodes. The study reveals the coexistence of superconductivity and a robust fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state in these devices. Additionally, the study identifies a possible signature for crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) across the superconductor, separating two FQH edges.

Summary: This study proposes a superconducting structure that enables the nucleation and control of vortices on-demand by controlling magnetic fields and currents. By introducing normal conducting rails to guide the nucleation process and motion of vortices, the researchers addressed the randomness of nucleation and studied the effects of rail-vortex and vortex-vortex interactions on resistance quantization.

High-quality two-dimensional electron gas in undoped InSb quantum wells

Zijin Lei et al.

Summary: In this study, transport experiments through high-mobility gate-tunable undoped InSb quantum wells were reported. The gate-defined two-dimensional electron gases in the QWs displayed increased mobility at low density. Spin-orbit interactions were characterized using magnetotransport experiments, and signatures of Ising quantum Hall ferromagnetism were found at certain conditions.

Anodic oxidation of epitaxial superconductor-semiconductor hybrids

Asbjorn C. C. Drachmann et al.

Summary: A new fabrication process for hybrid semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures based on anodic oxidation (AO) has been demonstrated, allowing controlled thinning of epitaxial Al films for enhanced superconducting properties and improved spatial uniformity. Passivation of the heterostructure by oxidizing Al has been shown to increase 2DEG mobilities and enable transparent coupling of quantum Hall effect and superconductivity. The compatibility of AO thinning and passivation with standard lithographic techniques provides high lateral resolution for local patterning and realization of semiconductor-based Josephson junctions.

Summary: Crystalline indium islands were in situ synthesized on InAs nanowires grown by molecular beam epitaxy, showing potential for a pristine In/InAs interface and Cooper pair charging behavior. The engineered crystal morphology and isolation of single islands using shadow epitaxy provides a new alternative for semiconductor/superconductor hybrid structures.

Parity-preserving and magnetic field-resilient superconductivity in InSb nanowires with Sn shells

M. Pendharkar et al.

Summary: By coating semiconductor indium antimonide nanowires with tin shells, researchers were able to prepare tunnel junctions without interdiffusion at the interface. A 15-nanometer-thick tin shell induced a hard superconducting gap, allowing superconductivity to persist in magnetic fields up to 4 teslas. These findings suggest a more flexible approach to fabricating superconducting and topological quantum circuits.

Summary: Ion implantation of silicon and selenium in gallium arsenide to form a conducting layer as a back-gate for a two-dimensional electron gas grown by molecular beam epitaxy shows promising results, with similar 2DEG mobilities achieved compared to non-implanted samples. Silicon implanted structures, annealed before MBE growth, result in a functional back-gate that allows tuning of the electron density of the 2DEG.

Weyl Josephson circuits

Valla Fatemi et al.

Summary: Weyl Josephson circuits that simulate Weyl band structures have been introduced. By designing circuits analogous to desired dimensionalities and symmetry classes of Bloch Hamiltonians, a six-junction device has been constructed, capable of producing a three-dimensional Weyl Hamiltonian with broken inversion symmetry and triggering topological phase transitions. It is argued that current superconducting circuit technology allows experiments to probe topological properties inaccessible in condensed matter systems.
