The Transformation from Translucent into Transparent Rare Earth Ions Doped Oxyfluoride Glass-Ceramics with Enhanced Luminescence

Zhencai Li et al.

Summary: In the process of heat treatment, the authors discovered that the optical transparency of a specific oxyfluoride precursor glass-ceramic (P-GC) increases with an increase in crystal size and crystallinity. They also observed that the growth of existing crystals and the formation of small spherical crystals greatly enhanced light transmittance. Through detailed morphology and structure analysis and molecular dynamics simulations, the authors found that the composition of the residual glass phase changed, leading to a reduction in the differences in refractive index between the glass matrix and the crystals. Consequently, the light scattering of the heat-treated P-GC was suppressed, resulting in transparency. Furthermore, proper heat treatment also enhanced the luminescence of the studied P-GC system.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of lithium oxide substitution on the structure, chemical dissolution, and mechanical properties of melt derived 4555 based glass-ceramics. It was found that the presence of lithium led to the formation of carbonated hydroxyapatite on the surface of the glass-ceramics, and resulted in higher mechanical properties.

Structural densification of lithium phosphoaluminoborate glasses

Pengfei Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of P2O5 in lithium aluminoborate glasses results in a more open and soft network. Upon compression, the coordination numbers of boron and aluminum increase, while the number of bridging oxygens around phosphorous decreases. Glasses with higher P2O5 content show a larger decrease in bridging oxygens, leading to a larger increase in coordination numbers of boron and aluminum.

Summary: The self-consistent PMMCS force fields have been revised and improved for simulating a variety of silicates, aluminosilicate, and phosphate crystals as well as multicomponent oxide glasses. The revised force fields better reproduce bond angle distributions and improve predictions of various structural properties in oxide glasses. Additionally, the FF model has been found to be more balanced and effective for simulating a wide range of oxide-based systems.

Environment dependence of KIc of glass

Theany To et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of temperature and moisture on the fracture toughness of glasses, finding that glass tends to have lower K-Ic values at lower temperatures and higher K-Ic values at temperatures approaching or exceeding the critical transition temperature. Additionally, for humidity-sensitive glasses, precracking and final fracture steps need to be conducted in an inert environment to obtain accurate K-Ic values.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of nepheline-based nanocrystalline transparent glass-ceramic designed in the Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2 ternary system nucleated with P2O5. By tracking the formation process of phosphate and nepheline nanocrystals, the optimization of nucleation and growth profile in the designed composition results in the formation of a transparent glass-ceramic with high optical transmittance.
