Protection motivation theory screening tool for predicting chronic low back pain rehabilitation adherence: analysis of a randomised controlled trial

Patrick J. Owen et al.

Summary: This study explored a screening tool based on protection motivation theory to predict rehabilitation adherence. The results showed that the perceived value of rehabilitation was positively correlated with treatment adherence in patients with chronic low back pain. This suggests that clinicians should consider the perceived value of rehabilitation in order to improve treatment adherence in this patient population.

Predictors of Adherence to a Step Count Intervention Following Total Knee Replacement: An Exploratory Cohort Study

Vicky Duong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the person-level predictors of adherence to a step count intervention following total knee replacement (TKR). The results showed that younger age, higher patient activation, and higher technology self-efficacy were associated with higher adherence to the intervention. However, after adjusting for age, patient activation and technology self-efficacy were no longer associated with adherence.

Development of an online tool for linking behavior change techniques and mechanisms of action based on triangulation of findings from literature synthesis and expert consensus

Marie Johnston et al.

Summary: This study triangulated evidence for hypothesized links between behavior change techniques (BCTs) and mechanisms of action (MoAs) from two previous studies, resulting in a total of 92 hypothesized BCT-MoA links. The evidence is available in an online interactive tool, providing guidance for behavior change intervention designers, researchers, and theorists to support intervention design, research synthesis, and collaborative research.

Rotator cuff related shoulder pain. Describing home exercise adherence and the use of behavior change interventions to promote home exercise adherence: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Kevin Hall et al.

Summary: This study reported and synthesized home exercise adherence and strategies to promote home exercise adherence in 17 RCTs. The findings suggest poor reporting of adherence and underutilization of behavior change interventions to promote HEP adherence.

Adherence to and the Maintenance of Self-Management Behaviour in Older People with Musculoskeletal Pain-A Scoping Review and Theoretical Models

Anne Soderlund et al.

Summary: The study focused on older adults' adherence to and maintenance of pain self-management programs, using capability, motivation, and opportunity as key components in theoretical models of behavior change. Education, supervision, readiness to change, goal setting, feedback, and social support were identified as important factors in promoting adherence and maintenance.

Do behaviour change techniques increase adherence to home exercises in those with upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders? A systematic review

Jonathan Thacker et al.

Summary: Social support may influence patients' adherence to home exercise programs, but there is uncertainty in the results due to the small number of studies and high risk of bias. Future studies should focus on validating measurement and definition of adherence, as well as the number of behavior change techniques used.
