Chain Walking in the AlCl3 Catalyzed Cationic Polymerization of α-Olefins

Amene Rahbar et al.

Summary: The basic mechanisms of 1-decene polymerization using a safer AlCl3 catalyst were revealed. The use of toluene solvent resulted in the synthesis of low molecular weight, low viscosity, and highly branched polyalphaolefins. NMR analysis confirmed the presence of various short chain branches and toluene rings in the final polymer chains. Molecular modeling confirmed the ease of carbocation isomerization and chain transfer mechanisms in toluene medium, supporting the experimental observations.

Effect of support hydrophobicity of halloysite-based catalysts on the polyalphaolefin hydrofinishing performance

Arash Shams et al.

Summary: This research investigates the effect of surface hydrophobicity of halloysite clay on the hydrogenation efficiency of polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Catalysts were prepared by palladation of halloysite, treatment with cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), and subsequent palladation. Experimental and computational studies reveal that the presence of CTAB decreases the activity of the catalyst, and the order of Pd and CTAB introduction influences the content, particle size, and catalytic activity of the catalysts. The most active catalyst was found to be Hal/Pd, achieving 98% hydrogenation of PAO.

An efficient initiator system containing AlCl3 and supported ionic-liquid for the synthesis of conventional grade polyisobutylene in mild conditions

Saleh Yousefi et al.

Summary: Ionic liquid based systems were used to facilitate the cationic polymerization of isobutylene. The AlCl3/S-IL initiator system was found to be a safer and greener alternative to the industrially used BF3 system. The microstructure and properties of the synthesized polyisobutylene were analyzed and compared, and DFT calculations were performed to investigate the catalyst interaction and sequestering in different systems.

Effect of polymer structure and chemistry on viscosity index, thickening efficiency, and traction coefficient of lubricants

Pawan Panwar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of molecular chemistry and structure on performance metrics in lubricants using molecular dynamics simulations. The relationships between viscosity index, thickening efficiency, and traction coefficient with molecular properties are revealed through experimental validation and simulation calculations. Moreover, simple empirical models are developed based on the simulation results for rapid prediction of lubricant performance metrics.

The effect of ionic liquid containing AlCl3 catalytic systems on the microstructure and properties of polyalphaolefin based lubricants

Mahtab Tabrizi et al.

Summary: A new class of ionic liquid containing AlCl3 catalysts was synthesized and used in 1-decene oligomerization to produce PAOs, offering a less-toxic alternative to traditional AlCl3 and BF3 catalysts. Different alkyl chlorides were employed to tune the catalytic efficiency, resulting in PAOs with varying microstructure and flow properties. The use of IL/AlCl3 system with reduced AlCl3 loading and proper selection of IL ligand allowed for control of PAO microstructure, showcasing significant achievements in the suggested catalytic systems.

High Double Bond Content of Polyisoprene Synthesis via Cationic Polymerization Synergistically Catalyzed by Tf2NH-Ionic Liquids

Guangqian Zhu et al.

Summary: The highly efficient and selective cationic polymerization of isoprene was achieved using a synergistic Tf2NH-ionic liquid (IL) catalytic system, leading to low-molecular-weight polyisoprenes with excellent yields, double bond content, and trans-1,4 selectivities. The IL cation effectively suppressed double bond reprotonation in polymer chains by reducing electron density, resulting in highly linear desired polymers, with potential for industrial application and recycling processes.
