Catch Estimates and Species Composition of Recreational Fishing in Israel

Ori Frid et al.

Summary: In this study, an extensive survey was conducted to document and quantify recreational fishing patterns across the Israeli Mediterranean shoreline. The results showed that recreational fishing accounted for 10%-37% of the total annual fishing yields, similar to other regions of the Mediterranean. Non-indigenous species were found to be common in recreational catch and contributed significantly to local fishery yields. The study identified 23 species that are targeted by both recreational and commercial fishing, indicating potential conflicts between these fishing sectors.

Evaluation of Marine Recreational Fisheries and Their Relation to Sustainability of Fisheries Resources in Greece

Anastasios Papadopoulos et al.

Summary: In 2019, Greece conducted a national telephone survey to estimate the number of marine recreational fishers, identify fishing methods, evaluate economic aspects, and assess the perception of marine recreational fishing. The results highlight the social and economic importance of this activity in Greece and emphasize the need for regular monitoring and field work for sustainable management of fisheries resources.

A Model of Quota Prices in a Multispecies Fishery with Choke Species and Discarding

Aaron Hatcher

Summary: This study uses a two-stage optimization model to simulate the determination of market-clearing quota lease prices in a multispecies fishery. The results show that equilibrium quota prices are jointly determined and are sensitive to both the number of species and the heterogeneity of the fleet. Excess demand for quota can cause bidding up of the quota price and resulting in some vessels earning inframarginal rents. The impact of a deemed value charge for over-quota landings is also examined.

Analysis of small-scale fisheries value chain: An interview-based approach in Italian marine protected areas

Antonio Di Cintio et al.

Summary: Small-scale fisheries in Italy, which account for a significant portion of the fishing fleet, are facing a crisis due to reduced catches and incomes. The lack of socio-economic data hinders effective resource management and the improvement of fishers' livelihoods. A survey of small-scale fishery fleets in southern Italy reveals that fishers receive the least economic benefits, while wholesalers and fish shops make the highest profits. This paper discusses potential market solutions, such as direct sale or transformation of low-value fish, to address the threats to fisher livelihoods.

Fishing tourism in Italy

Michele Romanelli et al.

Summary: Data from 2011-2012 shows that in Italy, the number of vessels authorized for fishing tourism has slowly increased over the years, with only around half of them actually engaged in the business. Despite a low average number of days spent with tourists at sea annually, good average revenues are recorded despite comparatively scarce catches.

Fishery management in a marine protected area with compliance gaps: Socio-economic and biological insights as a first step on the path of sustainability

Stefania Coppa et al.

Summary: Overfishing is a major impact on the marine environment, and multiple-use Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are seen as a useful tool for conservation and sustainable resource exploitation. However, ensuring effective protection on the ground is challenging, as demonstrated by the analysis of a sea urchin fishery in an Italian MPA. The study reveals that non-compliance with regulations by stakeholders is a key factor in the unsustainable management of the fishery, leading to a decline in sea urchin populations and the prevalence of illegal fishing activities.

Artisanal mollusc fisheries co-management in Brazil and Italy: Institutional innovations to address environmental crisis

Alana Casagrande et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the institutionalization processes and role of co-management in artisanal mollusc fisheries in two protected areas in Brazil and Italy. It explores how these networks are organized, the relationships social actors have developed for a sustainable fishery, and the potential for influencing environmental crises. Fishers' participation in co-management can lead to institutional innovations and stability, while offering insights into the connection between artisanal fishery institutionalization, resource co-management, and value aggregation for traditional seafood. Artisanal mollusc fishery co-management experiences can help in diagnosing early climate and environmental changes in the oceans.

Mitigating seasonality patterns in an archipelago: the role of ecotourism

Karl Agius et al.

Summary: Some islands have become heavily reliant on tourism due to their insularity and small economies, facing challenges in terms of seasonality and mass tourism. Ecotourism is considered a preferred alternative form of tourism among stakeholders, offering year-round activities to mitigate seasonality and improve the well-being of local communities. Marine ecotourism is seen as a means to add value to marine protected areas and make peak season tourism activity more sustainable.

Governance Analysis of St Anne Marine National Park, Seychelles

Lucy M. Cockerell et al.

Summary: The study highlights the ineffective top-down governance approach in St Anne Marine National Park, with threats such as poaching, coastal development, and unsustainable tourism. It points out the lack of government capacity and political will, as well as inadequate community involvement, hindering effective governance. The need for a combination of governance approaches and significant modifications to improve governance effectiveness is emphasized.
