Time-Scale Analysis of Prey Preferences and Ontogenetic Shift in the Diet of European Hake Merluccius merluccius (Linnaeus, 1758) in Southern and Central Tyrrhenian Sea

Claudio D'Iglio et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the feeding habits of European hakes in the southern and central Mediterranean Sea. The results showed that hakes are benthopelagic predators, preying in both the suprabenthic layer and the entire water column. Juvenile hakes prefer zooplanktonic prey, while larger hakes have a diet mainly based on teleosts and decapods. The study also highlighted the ability of European hake to adjust its diet based on geographical and prey availability.

CHARACTERIZATION OF THE REPRODUCTION OF EUROPEAN HAKE (MERLUCCIUS MERLUCCIUS, LINNAEUS, 1758) IN ORAN BAY

F. Belhoucine et al.

Summary: We conducted a study on European hake in Oran bay, focusing on its reproduction and the impact of local fishing on its population. Males dominated the catches throughout most of the year and were generally smaller than females. European hake exhibited partial spawning with asynchronous oocyte maturation and bred all year round. The study showed that males reached sexual maturity at a smaller size compared to females. It also highlighted that a significant portion (46%) of caught European hake were juveniles, which posed a threat to future fish stocks as they were killed before they could reproduce.

A chi-square goodness-of-fit test for continuous distributions against a known alternative

Wolfgang Rolke et al.

Summary: Although the chi square goodness-of-fit test is one of the oldest statistical tests and widely used, it is generally less effective when applied to data from a continuous distribution compared to other tests like Kolmogorov-Smirnov or Anderson-Darling tests. The performance of the chi square test heavily relies on how the data is binned, making it competitive or even superior to other standard tests in certain cases.

Sex Determination and Differentiation in Teleost: Roles of Genetics, Environment, and Brain

Preetha Rajendiran et al.

Summary: The sex determination and differentiation in teleosts are influenced by genetics, environmental factors, and brain function, which are species-specific processes involving various genes and environmental factors. The role of the brain in sex determination and differentiation of teleost is significant but still unclear.

Aspects of Reproductive Biology of the European Hake (Merluccius merluccius) in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea (GSA 17-Central Mediterranean Sea)

Michela Candelma et al.

Summary: The study focused on the macroscopic, histological, and biometric analysis of European hake females in GSA 17 (Central-North Adriatic Sea) from 2013 to 2015. Reproductive parameters such as spawning season, length at first maturity, and fecundity were analyzed, providing valuable information for sustainable resource management. This research contributes to a better understanding of the European hake population in the overfished Central-North Adriatic Sea region.
