Supplemental irrigation at jointing improves spike formation of wheat tillers by regulating sugar distribution in ear and stem

Yunqiu Shang et al.

Summary: Irrigation at jointing improves the spike formation rate and grain yield of wheat. It increases the soluble sugar and sucrose contents in young ears, but decreases them in stems. The discrepancy in young ear differentiation between tillers and the main stem can be reduced by irrigation.

Nitrogen regulates stem lodging resistance by breaking the balance of photosynthetic carbon allocation in wheat

Chunhui Li et al.

Summary: Appropriate nitrogen fertilization positively affects wheat yield, but excessive nitrogen leads to decreased stem resistance and yield. This study aimed to understand why high nitrogen fertilization increases the risk of stem lodging and how it regulates carbon allocation to balance yield and stem quality. The results showed that while nitrogen increased soluble sugar content in leaves, stems couldn't fully utilize the carbohydrates produced by leaves to synthesize sufficient lignin and cellulose, resulting in poor stem quality.

Optimizing the spatial distribution of roots by supplemental irrigation to improve grain yield and water use efficiency of wheat in the North China Plain

Suwei Feng et al.

Summary: Soil moisture affects the yield and water use efficiency of winter wheat by regulating root distribution. Supplemental irrigation at jointing and anthesis in the North China Plain region can optimize root structure and increase yield and WUE.

Impacts of climate change on water footprint components of rainfed and irrigated wheat in a semi-arid environment

Maryam Fathian et al.

Summary: Climate change significantly impacts water resources and agricultural products. Assessments of yield and water footprint show that in a semi-arid environment in Fars province, Iran, future climates will increase wheat yield in southern regions and reduce water footprints.

Characteristics of lodging resistance of high-yield winter wheat as affected by nitrogen rate and irrigation managements

Li Wen-qian et al.

Summary: High wheat yields can be achieved with high levels of nitrogen and irrigation, but this increases the risk of lodging. This study aimed to understand the lodging resistance of wheat in response to nitrogen and irrigation, and to find effective ways to improve lodging resistance in high-yield wheat cultivars.

Yanan Niu et al.

Summary: This review focuses on discussing the traits that contribute to increased lodging resistance in major cereal crops, including morphological, biochemical, and anatomical characteristics. It also summarizes strategies to improve crop performance under lodging stress, including agronomic management and genetic improvement. Maintaining relatively taller plants and improving straw strength are highlighted as effective ways to enhance lodging resistance.

Optimizing tillage method and irrigation schedule for greenhouse gas mitigation, yield improvement, and water conservation in wheat?maize cropping systems

Chong Wang et al.

Summary: The research found that inappropriate irrigation timing led to increased greenhouse gas emissions and reduced crop yield in the wheat-maize rotation system, while excessive irrigation resulted in decreased water use efficiency. Adjusting irrigation schedules can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase crop yield, and improve water use efficiency.
