Leached phosphorus apportionment and future management strategies across the main soil areas and cropping system types in northern China

Bingqian Fan et al.

Summary: Excess phosphorus leached from high fertiliser input cropping systems in northern China is affecting water quality, with protected vegetable fields contributing significantly to phosphorus losses. The most severe TP leached losses were observed in fluvo-aquic soil areas, and reducing phosphorus inputs can positively impact yields and water quality protection.

Effects of Fertilizer Reduction and Straw Application on Dynamic Changes of Phosphorus in Overlying and Leaching Water in Rice Fields

Wei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variation characteristics of phosphorus in overlying and leaching water during rice cultivation. The results show that reducing fertilizer and applying straw can effectively decrease phosphorus concentration in water. The high-risk period for phosphorus loss is within 10 days after fertilization. The study provides strategies to mitigate phosphorus loss and protect water resources.

Phosphorus fractionation related to environmental risks resulting from intensive vegetable cropping and fertilization in a subtropical region

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Overuse of phosphorus fertilizer can lead to phosphorus accumulation in soil in vegetable production, increasing the risk of phosphorus runoff and leaching. Long-term use of phosphorus fertilizer in intensive vegetable production can result in phosphorus surpluses and environmental risks. Therefore, reducing phosphorus fertilizer input is necessary to maintain soil phosphorus levels within an optimal range.

Long-term organic substitution management affects soil phosphorus speciation and reduces leaching in greenhouse vegetable production

Yinjie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that organic substitution treatments can effectively reduce phosphorus accumulation, increase organic phosphorus content, and decrease phosphorus leaching losses. Different organic amendments have varying impacts on soil phosphorus transformation, and combined application of manure, straw, and chemical fertilizer is a more effective practice for sustainable phosphorus management.

Phosphorus accumulation and leaching risk of greenhouse vegetable soils in Southeast China

Yusef Kianpoor Kalkhajeh et al.

Summary: This study quantified phosphorus accumulation in Chinese greenhouse vegetable production soils and found high phosphorus content in topsoils but lower total phosphorus content in subsoils. Phosphorus desorption dominated in highly saturated topsoils, while adsorbed phosphorus increased in the 80-100 cm subsoils with slightly larger adsorption capacity.

The effect of global change on soil phosphatase activity

Olga Margalef et al.

Summary: Nitrogen fertilization increases soil phosphatase activity, while phosphorus fertilization has the opposite effect. Rising atmospheric CO2 levels and the arrival of invasive species lead to higher soil phosphatase activity, but recurrent drought episodes decrease activity. Future soil phosphatase activity will depend not only on current soil conditions, but also on potential compensations or amplifications among different drivers of global change.

Response of soil bacterial communities, antibiotic residuals, and crop yields to organic fertilizer substitution in North China under wheat- maize rotation

Fen Xu et al.

Summary: The use of organic fertilizers can improve soil quality and crop yield, but overapplication may lead to the spread of antibiotics and resistance genes. Substituting 50% nitrogen mineral fertilizer with organic fertilizer can enhance the stability and sustainability of the soil ecosystem, but efforts should be made to reduce the risk of antibiotics contamination.
