Maize-soybean intercropping at optimal N fertilization increases the N uptake, N yield and N use efficiency of maize crop by regulating the N assimilatory enzymes

Jamal Nasar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of maize-soybean intercropping on nitrogen uptake, yield, utilization efficiency, and nitrogen assimilatory enzymes of maize crops under different nitrogen fertilization conditions. The results showed that intercropping at the optimal nitrogen rate significantly increased maize grain yield, residue yield, and 100-grain weight in both years. Intercropping also improved nitrogen content and uptake, as well as the activities of nitrogen assimilatory enzymes. These findings highlight the potential of intercropping for enhancing nitrogen status and use efficiency in maize crops, supporting sustainable agricultural production.

Impacts of heat shock on productivity and quality of Triticum aestivum L. at different growth stages

Rabia Goher et al.

Summary: The transitional phase of climate change is posing a worldwide threat, with fluctuating temperatures affecting field crop life cycles. This study investigated the impact of heat stress on wheat cultivars' growth, yield, and quality traits. The results showed that heat stress at sensitive stages significantly affected spike length, spike weight, grain weight, grains number, and amylose content. Heat stress at the booting stage had a greater negative impact on yield and grain quality compared to stress at anthesis.

Impact of Different Fertilizer Sources under Supplemental Irrigation and Rainfed Conditions on Eco-Physiological Responses and Yield Characteristics of Dragon's Head (Lallemantia iberica)

Saeid Heydarzadeh et al.

Summary: The effects of irrigation regime and different fertilizer sources on dragon's head were studied. It was found that supplemental irrigation and the use of vermicompost, poultry manure, and animal manure had positive effects on nutrient absorption, water content, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, and oil percentage of dragon's head. Organic fertilizer application increased antioxidant enzyme activity. The highest yields and phytochemical content were observed in plants treated with vermicompost under supplemental irrigation.

Conservation Tillage and Weed Management Influencing Weed Dynamics, Crop Performance, Soil Properties, and Profitability in a Rice-Wheat-Greengram System in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plain

Bushra Ahmed Alhammad et al.

Summary: A three-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of different tillage and residue management practices, as well as weed management approaches, in a rice-wheat-green gram rotation. The study found that adopting the transplanting method for rice, followed by zero tillage for wheat and green gram, enhanced productivity and profitability, while preserving soil health.

Effects of Limited Irrigation and Nitrogen Rate on the Herbage Yield, Water Productivity, and Nutritive Value of Sorghum Silage

Ali Farhadi et al.

Summary: The herbage yield and silage quality of sorghum can be influenced by nitrogen and irrigation levels. Increasing nitrogen levels can improve the yield and quality of sorghum, while reducing certain indicators of silage quality. Increasing irrigation levels affect not only the yield, but also the quality and water use efficiency of silage. The suitable treatment for sorghum silage production in semi-arid regions is I(75)x N-450, which can save irrigation water and achieve high yield and good quality silage.

Nitrogen fertilization coupled with iron foliar application improves the photosynthetic characteristics, photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency, and the related enzymes of maize crops under different planting patterns

Jamal Nasar et al.

Summary: This study found that intercropping combined with optimal N fertilizer application and foliar application of Fe could improve the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic characteristics of maize crops by regulating the associated enzymatic activities. This resulted in enhanced photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE), leading to better growth and higher yield in the intercropping system. Therefore, practicing intercropping with proper nutrient management (N and Fe) is crucial for maximizing the growth, yield, and nitrogen use efficiency of maize crops.
