Local- and landscape-scale drivers of terrestrial herbaceous plant diversity along a tropical rainfall gradient in Western Ghats, India

Summary: In this study, we investigated the importance of water and light availability in shaping the diversity of understory herbaceous angiosperms in a seasonally dry tropical forest landscape in India. Our results showed that water was not the limiting factor for herb diversity, but rather light availability, which was negatively correlated with rainfall. As a result, conservation and restoration efforts for different plant lifeforms should consider unique strategies.

Effect of Juglone and Other Allelochemicals in Walnut Leaves on Yield, Quality and Metabolites of Snack Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the yield, quality, metabolic responses, and potential toxicity of Cucumis sativus grown in juglone-containing soils. It was found that a concentration of 100 mu M of juglone or the same concentration of walnut leaf extract does not affect the yield of C. sativus, while a concentration of 1 mM of juglone strongly affects it. Juglone itself was found only in the roots of C. sativus, but not in the leaves or fruits, making C. sativus fruits considered safe for cultivation in juglone-containing soils.

This review provides an overview of antimicrobial phytochemicals from 123 Himalayan medicinal plants, offering valuable information for researchers exploring phytochemicals to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Physiological and biochemical responses of selected weed and crop species to the plant-based bioherbicide WeedLock

Summary: This study investigated the physiological and biochemical effects of WeedLock, a broad-spectrum plant-based bioherbicide, on several plant species. The results showed that WeedLock caused significant reductions in chlorophyll content and disrupted photosynthesis in all tested plants. The treated plants exhibited increased production of malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline, indicating phytotoxic stress. The activity of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD), was elevated following WeedLock treatment. These findings suggest that WeedLock disrupts normal physiological and biochemical processes in plants by producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), similar to the mode of action of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors.
