Summary: This research investigated the effect of peach remnants management, phosphorus levels, and beneficial microbes on the profitability and seed quality of the S-W system. The application of organic sources, phosphorus levels, and beneficial microbes improved soybean seed quality and system profitability. Peach biochar amendments had higher oil content, oil yield, protein content, and yield compared to peach compost and dry-based residues. Soil application of Trichoderma resulted in higher polyunsaturated fats, oil content, oil yield, and protein content and yield. The highest net return (NR) and VCR for soybean were achieved with biochar and compost application, and with 100 kg P ha(-1) application for phosphorus. Soil application of Trichoderma increased NR and VCR compared to seed inoculation with PSB. Peach biochar combined with 100 kg P ha(-1) application and soil application of Trichoderma showed the highest seed yield and system profitability.

Summary: Due to climate change, subhumid regions will face a significant increase in irrigation demand, posing challenges for agriculture with inefficient irrigation management. This study aims to evaluate irrigation systems and strategies for soybeans in Austria using the parameterized FAO AquaCrop model. Three irrigation methods were considered, and the results showed that a moderate deficit irrigation strategy with appropriate thresholds improved yields and irrigation water productivity. Drip systems outperformed sprinkler systems in terms of efficiency and water productivity.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of S and N on soybean yield in diverse environments across the United States, and found that soil and environmental factors are poor indicators of yield response to S and N additions. S did not limit yield in most environments, and the use of N and S fertilizers are rarely justified across diverse growing environments.

Summary: In this study, it was found that nanoparticles of zinc oxide (nZnO-S) had a significant stimulatory effect on seed yield, nutrient quality, and oil and protein yield in soybean. This suggests that nZnO-S has the potential to improve seed quality and production in soybean.

Summary: The contradiction between population growth and soil degradation requires the urgent development of novel fertilizers like biochar and microbial fertilizers. This study investigated the preparation and effects of biochar-based microbial fertilizers (BCMFs) by optimizing the preparation methods and the process parameters. The results showed that the adsorption-granulation process of biochar improved soil fertility by increasing total nitrogen and organic matter content, while also reducing nutrient leaching. The use of BCMFs enhanced soil quality and abundance of bacteria related to carbon and nitrogen metabolism.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the individual and combined effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and Bradyrhizobium on the growth, yield, and nutritional quality of guar plants. The results showed that inoculation with AMF and/or Bradyrhizobium improved the chemical composition and morpho-physiological traits of guar seeds and leaves. Furthermore, the inoculation increased the mineral, fiber, lipid, crude protein, and ash contents of guar, as well as the production of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids. This study sheds light on how AMF and Bradyrhizobium enhance guar yield and metabolism, and suggests that their combined inoculation is an innovative approach to improve the growth, yield, and quality of guar.

Summary: By analyzing the factors contributing to the increase in soybean productivity in China, it was found that genetic progress plays a significant role in yield gains in different regions. The increase in yield in the Northeast region is mainly attributed to an increase in the number of pods per plant, while in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain and Southern Multi-cropping Region, both pod number per plant and 100-grain weight contribute to yield gains. Genetic progress also reduces the sensitivity of higher yielding cultivars to heat stress. This research emphasizes the importance of genetic improvement in ensuring sustainable food security.

Summary: China has a low self-sufficiency rate of soybean and heavily relies on imports due to its high consumption. To address this dilemma, a spatial analysis of potential soybean production in China was conducted using primary weather and crop production data. The study found that the current soybean yield gap in China is significant and closing this gap could increase self-sufficiency rate to a maximum of 52% by combining yield gap closure and area expansion. However, even with these measures, a significant amount of soybean still needs to be imported to meet future domestic demand.

Summary: The study found that the content of arsenic in soil increased with decreasing particle size in anthropogenically disturbed mining zones. In particular, the fine soil particles (0.45-2 μm) contained high levels of arsenic, mainly in readily soluble, specifically sorbed, and Al-oxide fractions. In contrast, naturally mineralized zones showed a decrease in arsenic content with decreasing particle size, and arsenic mainly accumulated in the coarse fraction of soil (0.075-2 mm).

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of combining no-tillage and moldboard plow systems with rye and fallow cover crops treatments on soil organic carbon and soil water retention in volcanic ash Andosol soil of Japan. The results showed that combining no-tillage system with rye cover crops significantly increased soil organic carbon, water-stable aggregates, and water retention capacity, making it an effective agricultural practice to mitigate the drought effects of climate change.

Summary: Understanding the distribution of soil organic carbon and nitrogen (OC(N)), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and specific surface area (SSA) in different soil particle sizes is important for studying soil fertility and properties. This study investigated the distribution characteristics of OC(N), CEC, and SSA in yellow-brown soil particles under different methods. As particle size decreased, soil OC(N), SSA, and CEC content gradually increased. There were significant linear relationships between OC and ON, SSA and equivalent diameter, and CEC and SSA. These findings provide valuable data support and a theoretical basis for understanding soil properties.

Summary: The excessive application of phosphorus fertilizer is a major agricultural problem. This study found that reducing phosphorus fertilizer combined with microbial fertilizer can improve soil quality and increase crop yield. Additionally, it was discovered that phosphorus fertilizer reduction can affect the structure of soil bacterial and fungal communities, regulating the abundance of beneficial and pathogenic bacteria.

Summary: The comparison between organic and conventional farming systems on boreal arable soil microbiota revealed higher microbial activity and biomass in the organic system, particularly in cereal crop rotation. Organic systems exhibited greater microbial richness in autumn, potentially due to the abundance of fungi contributing to increased microbial activity and carbon sequestration. The study also indicated that farming practices typical of organic farming, such as green manure and continuous plant cover, have induced changes in the soil microbiome.
