Phosphorus homeostasis: acquisition, sensing, and long-distance signaling in plants

V Prathap et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant growth and development, but often limits plant growth. Plants have various mechanisms to sense the phosphorus content in the soil and regulate root growth to adapt to low phosphorus conditions. Crop improvement strategies under low phosphorus conditions can focus on improving phosphorus acquisition efficiency or increasing phosphorus utilization. Phosphate transporters, transcription factors, microRNAs, and proteins play important roles in regulating cellular phosphorus homeostasis.

Conservation practices modify soil phosphorus sorption properties and the composition of dissolved phosphorus losses during runoff

Xuemei Chen et al.

Summary: Shallow tillage and no-tillage can increase the risk of dissolved phosphorus (P) loss compared to conventional tillage. This study found that changing tillage practices can affect soil P sorption properties and increase the loss of dissolved P during runoff. Additionally, the risk of dissolved P loss was higher when poultry manure was used as fertilizer.

Use of Vegetable Residues and Cover Crops in the Cultivation of Maize Grown in Different Tillage Systems

Felicia Chetan et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of soil tillage systems and fertilization on the yield and quality of maize, aiming to develop and promote integrated technologies in conservation agriculture. The results indicate that minimum tillage with chisel followed by disk harrow and sowing can be considered as an alternative to conventional tillage for maize cultivation. Additionally, combined fertilization with vegetable residues and cover crops can improve and optimize maize yield and quality.

Conservation tillage or plastic film mulching? A comprehensive global meta-analysis based on maize yield and nitrogen use efficiency

Kaiping Zhang et al.

Summary: Rain-fed agriculture plays a vital role in ensuring food security. This study compared the yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of conservation tillage (CT) and plastic film mulching (PM) in maize cultivation and analyzed the factors influencing the choice of cultivation practice. The results showed that PM significantly increased maize yield and NUE, while CT had negative effects. The choice of cultivation practice was influenced by factors such as growing season precipitation, temperature, and soil characteristics.

Optimizing Wheat Yield, Water, and Nitrogen Use Efficiency With Water and Nitrogen Inputs in China: A Synthesis and Life Cycle Assessment

Zhou Li et al.

Summary: Enhancing wheat yield and resource use efficiency through optimizing water and nitrogen management can promote agricultural sustainability and regenerative farming in developing countries like China. Soil nutrient status and organic carbon content have a greater impact on wheat yield and resource use efficiency. Water and nitrogen-saving management should be promoted to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

Tillage Practices and Residue Management Manipulate Soil Bacterial and Fungal Communities and Networks in Maize Agroecosystems

Yupeng Guan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tillage practices and residue management on soil bacterial and fungal communities and co-occurrence networks. The results showed that tillage practices had no impact on bacterial and fungal communities in 2017, but had a significant impact in 2018. Different tillage practices had different effects on soil microbial co-occurrence networks, with rotary and deep tillage increasing bacterial network complexity but simplifying fungal networks. However, residue retention only caused a shift in the fungal community and simplified soil bacterial and fungal networks in 2018.

Impact of precipitation variation on summer forage crop productivity and precipitation use efficiency in a semi-arid environment

Xingfa Lai et al.

Summary: Planting annual forage crops can improve fodder supplies and optimize cropping systems in semi-arid regions. Under variable precipitation conditions, oat and soybean are two suitable forage crops that can be integrated into existing cropping systems. Oat has higher dry matter yield and water use efficiency, while soybean has higher crude protein yield and precipitation use efficiency.

Ploughing/zero-tillage rotation regulates soil physicochemical properties and improves productivity of erodible soil in a residue return farming system

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: After an 11-year experiment, it was found that ploughing and zero tillage rotation (PZT) had negative effects on soil water storage, soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (N) storage, and soil structure stability in comparison to zero tillage (ZT). However, PZT significantly increased SOC and N storage in deeper soil layers and improved soil penetration resistance. Additionally, PZT also significantly increased maize and wheat yields compared to ZT and ploughing tillage (PT). This study suggests that combining ploughing and zero tillage with the return of crop residue can effectively improve soil productivity in erodible areas.

Summary: A study conducted in the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve in Southern China showed that as forest succession progresses, plants experience increased phosphorus limitation while rhizosphere microbes experience decreased phosphorus limitation. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a significant role in transforming occluded phosphorus into labile and moderately labile organic phosphorus forms during the succession of forests.

Application of residue, inorganic fertilizer and lime affect phosphorus solubilizing microorganisms and microbial biomass under different tillage and cropping systems in a Ferralsol

Peter Bolo et al.

Summary: The study found that reduced tillage significantly increased microbial biomass phosphorus (MBP) and abundance of different PSMs, while residue addition also significantly increased MBP and PSMs abundance. However, the effect of liming on PSMs abundance was inconsistent between the two years of the study. Fertilizer addition had a significant impact on PSMs abundance in 2016, but this effect was inconsistent in 2017. Additionally, the study showed that different tillage and cropping systems can have variable effects on soil microbial populations.
