Global impact of COVID-19 on agriculture: role of sustainable agriculture and digital farming

Adithya Sridhar et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the global agro-food system and economy, particularly in terms of food production, demand, price hikes, security, and supply chain. In order to achieve sustainable development goals, sustainable agricultural practices should be adopted and the use of digital tools in the agro-food sector should be explored.

Improving inherent soil productivity underpins agricultural sustainability

Jia Bao Zhang

Summary: There is growing concern about increasing global food production and security, given the expanding population worldwide. The stability and high yield of crops rely on improving soil quality, which in turn depends on enhancing inherent soil productivity. Enhancements in inherent soil productivity have multiple benefits for soil structure, microorganisms, nutrient cycling, and carbon sequestration. Further research is needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms of improving inherent soil productivity under different agricultural management practices on a large scale. Therefore, efforts should focus on developing technologies related to straw return, tillage management, and cover cropping, while also understanding their relationship with improving inherent soil productivity.

Organic agriculture in a low-emission world: exploring combined measures to deliver sustainable food system in Sweden

Shyam Basnet et al.

Summary: In the EU, organic farming is considered as a promising approach for sustainable production. However, expanding organic farming in Sweden to reach the national target of 30% of farmland remains challenging. This study developed two scenarios and assessed the impact of organic farming on the Swedish food system, showing that implementing organic farming alongside sustainable food system initiatives can reduce land use and emissions.

Distribution, horizontal transfer and influencing factors of antibiotic resistance genes and antimicrobial mechanism of compost tea

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence and changes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in compost tea and its composting products and liquid fermentation. The results showed that liquid fermentation reduced ARGs in chicken manure and sludge compost tea, but increased ARGs in pig manure and bovine manure compost tea. Liquid fermentation also enriched the presence of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) in compost tea.

Compost Tea Induces Growth and Resistance against Rhizoctonia solani and Phytophthora capsici in Pepper

Ana Isabel Gonzalez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Compost teas (CTs) are organic solutions that have been found to suppress the growth of pathogens on pepper plants, leading to increased plant growth, earlier flowering, and a better ability to cope with biotic stresses. These effects are attributed to the rich nutrient content and microbiota present in CTs.

Root Zone Management for Improving Seedling Quality of Organically Produced Horticultural Crops

Domenico Ronga et al.

Summary: The current trend in vegetable production systems is focused on improving yield and quality to enhance sustainability, driven by increasing consumer demand for organic vegetables. This has led to the need to produce high-quality seedlings suitable for organic farming, with a particular focus on root zone management. Industrialized nurseries are now providing uniform and early-developing seedlings, meeting the evolving needs of the market.

Effects of Organic Additives on Chemical, Microbiological and Plant Pathogen Suppressive Properties of Aerated Municipal Waste Compost Teas

Assunta Maria Palese et al.

Summary: This study found that the total nitrogen content in aerated compost teas increased with rising doses of additives, but the contribution to plant mineral nutrition was limited. However, the teas exhibited a broad spectrum of suppressive properties against plant pathogens, especially when used in a raw form.
