Factor analysis thermography for defect detection of panel paintings

Kaixin Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method that uses factor analysis thermography and fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm to automatically extract defect features from thermal images and segment defects and background. By means of factor rotation, the complexity of factor loadings is minimized. Experimental results show that this method has advantages in improving the accuracy and efficiency of thermal defect detection.

Quantitative measurement of cast metal relics by pulsed thermal imaging

Ning Tao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for measuring the rust thickness and substrate thickness of a replica cast-iron Buddha head using one-sided pulsed thermal imaging. The method determines the rust and substrate thickness simultaneously through non-linear fitting of theoretical and experimental values. The effects of finite flash duration and substrate thickness on rust thickness measurement are analyzed and discussed.

Application of non-invasive active infrared thermography for delamination detection in fresco

Jesse Williams et al.

Summary: In the most common method of fresco painting, a unique integration of paint and plaster allows for frescos to acquire great durability and permanence. Non-destructive techniques, such as thermography, can be used to prevent serious damage to frescos caused by delamination of plaster layers. This method was successfully implemented on frescos within the Senate Reception Room of the United States Capitol Building.

A novel method for sensitivity modelling of optical gas imaging thermal cameras with warm filters

Robert Olbrycht

Summary: This study introduces a novel method for sensitivity modelling of uncooled thermal cameras for optical gas imaging, which allows estimation of sensitivity without physically installing a filter inside the camera. The method can also be used to predict changes in noise equivalent temperature difference after filter installation.

Autonomous dynamic line-scan continuous-wave terahertz non-destructive inspection system combined with unsupervised exposure fusion

Jue Hu et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to develop a new non-destructive inspection system using terahertz and infrared thermography to detect wooden objects in cultural heritage. A new fusion algorithm is proposed to correct the inaccurate image acquisition caused by unbalanced exposure source. The system has the capability of speedy detection and processing.

Thermographic Imaging in Cultural Heritage: A Short Review

Vasiliki Dritsa et al.

Summary: There has been a growing interest in using pulsed infrared thermography (PT) for the non-destructive evaluation of Cultural Heritage (CH) recently. PT allows the depth-resolved detection of subsurface features, providing valuable information for scholars and restorers. Ongoing research activities aim to further enhance the effectiveness of PT. This manuscript reviews the specific use of PT in the analysis of three types of CH, including documentary materials, panel paintings-marquetry, and mosaics.

Non-destructive imaging of marqueteries based on a new infrared-terahertz fusion technique

Jue Hu et al.

Summary: This study presents a technique for detecting subsurface defects in cultural heritage objects by fusing information obtained from non-destructive imaging and terahertz imaging. The fusion technique allows for high-contrast defect detection at different depths and has been proven effective through experiments.

In-situ monitoring of a laser metal deposition (LMD) process: comparison of MWIR, SWIR and high-speed NIR thermography

Simon J. Altenburg et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing offers novel applications, but the complex manufacturing process and production of defect-free, reliable, and durable parts remain a challenge. Thermography is a valuable tool for process surveillance in metal additive manufacturing, particularly in high-temperature environments where cameras operating in the visible spectral range can be used.
