Relative Kinetics of Solid-State Reactions: The Role of Architecture in Controlling Reactivity

Gabrielle E. Kamm et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance of understanding and controlling the phenomena that limit solid-state reactions for material synthesis. The study focuses on a model reaction and explores how altering the packing and interfacial contact between reagent particles affects the reaction kinetics. Analysis shows that there are different kinetic regimes in the reaction process, with the fast kinetic regime dominating the initial stages of the reaction. The article also presents simulation results that support the observed experimental findings.

Fatty Acids and Their Metal Salts: A Review of Their Infrared Spectra in Light of Their Presence in Cultural Heritage

Anna Filopoulou et al.

Summary: In a cultural heritage context, fatty acids are important components found in archaeological findings, aged oil paintings, and modern art-related materials. Their interaction with the ionic environment, transformation into metal soaps, and characterization through infrared spectroscopy are key factors to consider for their identification and preservation.

Summary: A multi-analytical approach was used to investigate organic remains preserved on eight copper alloy artifacts from the Byzantine Collection of the Benaki Museum with an Egyptian provenance. The study identified a wide range of fatty acid oxidation products in the samples, suggesting multiple uses of plant oils in medieval Egypt.

The kinetics of metal soap crystallization in oil polymers

Joen Hermans et al.

Summary: The crystallization of metal soaps in oil paint affects the appearance and structural stability of artworks, and understanding the structural transitions and kinetics during this process can support conservation decisions. Research showed that zinc soap crystallization is influenced by oil matrix properties, forming crystalline polymorphs in varying ratios with two-stage kinetics, while lead soap crystallization is fast but leads to increasing disorder with matrix polymerization. Results provide fundamental insight and foundations for improved risk assessment during conservation treatment of oil paintings.
