MicrobiomeAnalyst 2.0: comprehensive statistical, functional and integrative analysis of microbiome data

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: Microbiome studies have become routine in various scientific fields, requiring user-friendly bioinformatics tools to analyze complex multi-omics datasets. MicrobiomeAnalyst 2.0 is introduced here as a comprehensive tool for statistical analysis, visualization, functional interpretation, and integrative analysis of microbiome data. It features three new modules for data processing, metabolomics profiling, and statistical meta-analysis, along with other improvements such as support for multi-factor analysis and interactive visualizations.

Poultry gut health and beyond

Richard Ducatelle et al.

Summary: Intestinal health is crucial for digestion and nutrient absorption, which directly impacts performance. High performing poultry lines often face intestinal health issues due to high feed intake, putting pressure on the digestive system. Excess undigested nutrients can lead to dysbiosis and inflammation, causing gut leakage. This paper reviews key factors and nutritional tools to support intestinal health.

Developmental Change of Yolk Microbiota and Its Role on Early Colonization of Intestinal Microbiota in Chicken Embryo

Peng Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, the developmental change of yolk microbiota and its influence on early colonization of intestinal microbiota in the chicken embryo were investigated. The results showed that the relative abundance of yolk microbiota was barely changed during embryogenesis. The yolk microbiota influenced the embryonic intestinal microbiota by increasing the colonization of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes in the intestine.

Effects of late incubation temperature and moment of first post-hatch feed access on neonatal broiler development, temperature preference, and stress response

H. J. Wijnen et al.

Summary: Early life experiences are crucial for later life, as exposure to stress and delayed feeding in broilers can affect fearfulness, development, and temperature preference. These effects may also depend on late incubation temperature.

Effects of early post-hatch feeding on the growth performance, hormone secretion, intestinal morphology, and intestinal microbiota structure in broilers

D. L. Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of time access to post-hatch feeding on the growth performance, hormone secretion, intestinal morphology, and intestinal microbiota structure of broilers. The results showed that immediate feeding led to higher average daily gain and average daily feed intake, as well as improved intestinal morphology and hormone secretion compared to delayed feeding. Moreover, immediate feeding also resulted in lower abundance of certain bacteria in the intestinal microbiota.

Delayed access to feed early post-hatch affects the development and maturation of gastrointestinal tract microbiota in broiler chickens

Monika Proszkowiec-Weglarz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in the microbiome of broiler chickens during the early post-hatch period and the impact of delayed access to feed on the microbiota. The results showed that delayed access to feed affects microbiota development and the chicken intestine harbors diverse bacterial populations during the early post-hatch period.

Early life environment affects behavior, welfare, gut microbiome composition, and diversity in broiler chickens

Ingrid C. de Jong et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of early-life conditions on the behavior and welfare of broiler chickens, and whether this is related to changes in gut microbiome composition and diversity. The results suggest that the use of a dark brooder positively affects behavior and welfare, as well as the composition and diversity of the microbiome.

Managing Gut Microbiota through In Ovo Nutrition Influences Early-Life Programming in Broiler Chickens

Abdelrazeq M. Shehata et al.

Summary: The in ovo technology delivers bioactive compounds to embryos before hatching, improving chicken body weight, feed conversion ratio, and meat yield. Utilizing in ovo stimulation with probiotics and prebiotics can potentially prevent metabolic disorders, poor immunity, and pathogen resistance in the broiler industry.

Genome-Wide Transcriptomic Analysis of n-Caproic Acid Production in Ruminococcaceae Bacterium CPB6 with Lactate Supplementation

Shaowen Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genome-wide transcriptional analysis of Ruminococcaceae bacterium strain CPB6 for n-Caproic acid (CA) production triggered by the supplementation of exogenous lactate. Lactate supplementation led to earlier CA production, as well as higher final CA titer and productivity. The findings revealed that various genes, including those involved in reverse beta-oxidation pathway, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, substrate-binding protein (SBP), and phosphotransferase system (PTS) transporters, were upregulated in response to lactate addition.

Eggshell and Feed Microbiota Do Not Represent Major Sources of Gut Anaerobes for Chickens in Commercial Production

Jiri Volf et al.

Summary: This study investigated the origin of chicken gut microbiota in commercial production through microbiota analysis by 16S rRNA sequencing. It was found that neither eggshells nor feed served as major sources of gut microbiota for newly hatched chickens, and they must be colonised from additional sources such as air dust with spores of Clostridiales.

Association of female reproductive tract microbiota with egg production in layer chickens

Yuan Su et al.

Summary: The microbiota in the reproductive tract of chickens plays a significant role in egg production, with microbial species related to immune function potentially enhancing egg production. Differences in reproductive tract microbiota were found to be more strongly associated with egg production than those in the digestive tract.

Vertically transmitted microbiome protects eggs from fungal infection and egg failure

M. E. Bunker et al.

Summary: The study shows that female S. virgatus lizards transfer beneficial microbes from their cloaca onto their eggs during oviposition, reducing fungal colonization and infection during incubation, ultimately increasing female fitness. This cloacal transfer of egg-protective bacteria may be common among oviparous species, particularly advantageous for those without parental care.
