Leaky Gut and the Ingredients That Help Treat It: A Review

Ricardo Santos Aleman et al.

Summary: The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is in contact with potentially harmful substances on a daily basis. Factors such as stress, an unhealthy diet, and medication can compromise the integrity of the intestines and lead to increased intestinal permeability. This can result in the entry of harmful agents into the bloodstream and the development of various diseases. Therefore, finding strategies to reduce intestinal permeability is important. This review suggests that functional ingredients can play a role in mediating leaky gut-related disorders.

Novel model for chronic intestinal inflammation in chickens: (2) Immunologic mechanism behind the inflammatory response

Gabriela Cardoso Dal Pont et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms driving chronic intestinal inflammation in chickens by applying a nutritional model of low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation. The results showed the involvement of immune and intestinal cells, particularly T-cells, in the inflammation.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidative Phytogenic Substances against Secret Killers in Poultry: Current Status and Prospects

Shereen Basiouni et al.

Summary: Chronic stress and inflammation have detrimental impacts on the health and performance of animals, including poultry. This review discusses the mechanistic pathways of oxidative stress and inflammation associated with the main stressors in poultry, such as heat stress, dysbiosis, leaky gut syndrome, and mycotoxins. The use of phytogenic bioactive substances to mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation in poultry is also explored.

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Phytogenic Substances for Optimizing Gut Health in Poultry

Awad A. Shehata et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a significant role in host metabolism, physiology, nutrition, and immune function. The interaction between the gut microbiota and their host animals is mutually beneficial and dynamic. Manipulating the gut microbiota through dietary supplementation with prebiotics, probiotics, and phytogenic substances can control metabolic diseases and improve animal health and performance. These compounds indirectly influence the gut microbiota quality and enhance the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier.

Caraway (Carum carvi L.) in fast-growing and slow-growing broiler chickens' diets and its effect on performance, digestive tract morphology and blood biochemical profile

Ondrej Stastnik et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of adding caraway (1%) to diets of fast-growing and slow-growing broiler chickens on performance parameters, blood biochemical profile, and organ sizes and ileum morphology in slow-growing broilers. The results showed that the addition of 1% caraway did not significantly affect performance parameters, blood biochemical profile, and organ sizes in both fast-growing and slow-growing broilers. However, in slow-growing broilers, the addition of caraway resulted in significant changes in the height of villi and the depth of crypts in the ileum.

Novel Models for Chronic Intestinal Inflammation in Chickens: Intestinal Inflammation Pattern and Biomarkers

Gabriela C. Dal Pont et al.

Summary: This study established two novel models of low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation in poultry and demonstrated that intestinal inflammation typically begins in the upper segments of the small intestine and moves downwards over time. In terms of measurement, the protein CALP may be a promising biomarker for poultry gut inflammation.
