The copy number variation of DMBT1 gene effects body traits in two Chinese cattle breeds

Li Zheng et al.

Summary: This study discovered a new copy number variation (CNV) in the DMBT1 gene of Chinese cattle breeds and found significant associations between this CNV and body size traits in Jiaxian and Pinan cattle. Additionally, the expression of the DMBT1 gene was found to be high in tuberculosis susceptible tissues and during early differentiation of myoblasts. These findings suggest that the CNV in the DMBT1 gene could be used as a candidate marker for bovine growth and health in marker-assisted selection breeding.

Strategies to improve the efficiency of beef cattle production

Stephanie A. Terry et al.

Summary: Globally, there are approximately one billion beef cattle, and strategies to improve their efficiency focus on operational and breeding management, host genetics, rumen and respiratory microbiomes, and feed structure. Genotyping can identify hybrid vigor with positive consequences for animal health, productivity, and environmental adaptability, while microbial markers within the rumen microbiome can help identify hosts efficient at fibre digestion. Plant breeding and processing are optimizing the feed value of forages and concentrates, all in an effort to meet the future demand for beef sustainably.

Capitalizing on the Potential of South African Indigenous Beef Cattle Breeds: A Review

Este Van Marle-Koster et al.

Summary: Cattle populations arrived in Southern Africa almost 2000 years ago, brought by farming communities migrating southwards. Over the centuries, cattle have played a crucial role in livestock production, cultural events, and social status indicators. Research indicates that indigenous cattle breeds in South Africa are well-adapted to local environmental conditions and have the potential to enhance productivity and alleviate poverty in the developing livestock sector.

Ensembl 2021

Kevin L. Howe et al.

Summary: The Ensembl project provides genome annotation and data dissemination services for vertebrate species, including detailed annotation of gene structures, regulatory elements, and variants, as well as inferring the evolutionary history of genes and genomes. They offer integrated genomic data through various means such as genome browsers, search interfaces, specialist tools, and download files. Recent developments include the Ensembl Rapid Release and the SARS-CoV-2 genome browser, aiding in the international scientific response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
