Host species is linked to pathogen genotype for the amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis)

Allison Q. Byrne et al.

Summary: Host-pathogen specificity can be influenced by both the host and pathogen, and understanding the correlation between host species identity and pathogen genotype can provide insights into historical host-pathogen dynamics. In this study, genetic data from amphibian skin swabs and cultured isolate samples in the United States were used to investigate Bd genetic patterns. The results highlight the correlation between Bd-GPL genotypes and host species identity, suggesting a previously unknown association between Bd genotype and host.

Spatiotemporal adaptive evolution of an MHC immune gene in a frog-fungus disease system

Alexa L. Trujillo et al.

Summary: The study revealed a link between MHC diversity and pathogen susceptibility in Northern leopard frogs, with incongruences in phylogenetic and population genetic patterns between MHC and neutral markers. MHC heterozygosity was a significant factor in spatial patterns of pathogen prevalence, and positive selection was shown to contribute to MHC evolution in R. pipiens.
