A comprehensive profile of reproductive hormones in eusocial Damaraland mole-rats (Fukomys damarensis)

Summary: By measuring plasma and urinary hormones in Damaraland mole-rats, this study found that breeders (both male and female) had higher concentrations of urinary testosterone and progesterone compared to non-breeders. These results, along with differences in the expression of hormone receptors in the brains of breeders and non-breeders, suggest that elevated testosterone and progesterone contribute to establishing a neural dominance phenotype that helps control breeding activities.

This study validated an enzyme immunoassay for monitoring faecal androgen metabolites in Notomys alexis. The results showed that this method can reliably monitor testicular activity and contribute to a better understanding of the species' unusual reproductive biology.
