Encapsulation of cinnamaldehyde: an insight on delivery systems and food applications

Bertrand Muhoza et al.

Summary: Cinnamaldehyde, an essential oil extracted from cinnamon plants, has various biological functions. However, its poor solubility in water and sensitivity to oxygen, light, and high temperature limit its direct application. Researchers are using encapsulation techniques to enhance its potential and different delivery systems have been developed. The performance of each system is influenced by factors such as particle size, composition, and properties.

Prevalence and Antimicrobial Resistance of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli from Laying Hens Housed in Different Rearing Systems

Gaia Casalino et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the incidence of C. jejuni and C. coli infection in laying hens housed in different rearing systems, with higher infection rates found in hens housed in aviaries. Antibiotic resistance was mainly detected among C. coli strains, highlighting the need to increase biosecurity measures.

Antibiotic Resistance Genes Occurrence in Conventional and Antibiotic-Free Poultry Farming, Italy

Muhammad Farooq et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a complex and widespread problem that poses a threat to human and animal health. The distribution of resistant bacteria and their genes in poultry farms is a matter of concern globally, including in Italy. This study compares the distribution of resistance genes in litter samples from conventional and antibiotic-free broiler flocks, aiming to identify any influence of farming systems on the spread and maintenance of resistance determinants. The results show the presence of resistance genes in both farming systems, with higher positivity for tetracycline genes in antibiotic-free flocks.

In Vitro Antimicrobial Effectiveness Tests Using Garlic (Allium sativum) against Salmonella enterica Subspecies enterica Serovar Enteritidis

Elena Circella et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a more cautious use of drugs on livestock farms, leading to the consideration of alternative products in order to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of garlic in inhibiting Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis and to determine its Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)(90) and MIC50 values. The results showed that garlic has the potential to inhibit the growth of S. Enteritidis in vitro, with efficacy varying depending on the microbial concentration used.

Antibiofilm activities of the cinnamon extract againstVibrio parahaemolyticusandEscherichia coli

Chengrong Lu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that cinnamon extract exhibited high antibacterial activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Escherichia coli, effectively inhibiting biofilm formation and eradicating mature biofilms. The extract also significantly reduced metabolic activities and EPS secretion in biofilms, leading to thinner EPS and looser biofilm structure compared to untreated controls.

The population genetics of pathogenicEscherichia coli

Erick Denamur et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli, a commensal of the vertebrate gut and an opportunistic pathogen, has evolved virulence mainly through acquiring virulence genes on mobile elements in a specific chromosomal background. The emergence of stable and cosmopolitan lineages of pathogenic E. coli reflects an optimization of strain fitness through interactions between virulence determinants and the rest of the genome, with few lineages responsible for pathologies compared to the diversity of commensal strains.

New Insights into the Antimicrobial Action of Cinnamaldehyde towards Escherichia coli and Its Effects on Intestinal Colonization of Mice

Wellison A. Pereira et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of cinnamaldehyde on mice colonized by pathogenic E. coli, and found that the compound has antimicrobial properties against E. coli 042 without affecting bacteria-related gene expressions or causing toxicity to animal cells and insect larvae. The results suggest that cinnamaldehyde is a promising lead molecule for the development of antimicrobial agents.
