Nano-delivery systems for encapsulation of phenolic compounds from pomegranate peel

Hashem Andishmand et al.

Summary: Pomegranate peel, a main byproduct of pomegranate fruit, contains rich phenolic compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and health effects. This article reviews recent advancements in the design and fabrication of nano-delivery systems for pomegranate peel bioactive compounds, focusing on lipid-based nanocarriers such as solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and vesicular nanocarriers. These lipid-based nanocarriers have low toxicity, large-scale production feasibility, easy synthesis, and high biocompatibility, making them a promising approach for enhancing the quality, safety, shelf life, and health benefits of pomegranate products.

Evaluating the antimicrobial and apoptogenic properties of bacteriocin (nisin) produced by Lactococcus lactis

Naveen Thanjavur et al.

Summary: In this study, nisin was extracted from Lactococcus lactis, purified, and tested for its antibacterial and anticancer properties. The purified nisin showed superior antibacterial and antifungal activities compared to earlier literature. It also exhibited high anticancer activity while causing minimal damage to normal cells. These findings pave the way for future development of nisin-based therapy as new anticancer drugs.

Antioxidant Activity and Probiotic Properties of Lactic Acid Bacteria

Seonyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant activity of 15 food-derived bacterial strains, and found that eight strains displayed excellent inhibition effect on nitric oxide production. These selected strains also showed reduced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase/cyclooxygenase-2 and exhibited stability and adhesion ability in the gastrointestinal tract. These strains have potential as new probiotics with antioxidant effects.

Inulin added electrospun composite nanofibres by electrospinning for the encapsulation of probiotics: characterisation and assessment of viability during storage and simulated gastrointestinal digestion

Dilan Duman et al.

Summary: This study encapsulated the probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum in composite nanofibres and found that the addition of inulin can improve the fiber's tensile strength and viability, while also affecting the encapsulation efficiency of probiotics. The research suggests that the obtained nanofibres serve as an effective delivery system to enhance the viability of probiotics under adverse conditions.

Research on the fate of polymeric nanoparticles in the process of the intestinal absorption based on model nanoparticles with various characteristics: size, surface charge and pro-hydrophobics

Shiqi Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the absorption of intestinal nanoparticles through different stages and found that the behavior of NPs in each stage varied due to differences in particle properties. Results showed that small size, low negative charge, and moderate hydrophilicity facilitated NPs passing through the small intestinal mucus layer, while appropriate size, positive surface charge, and hydrophobic properties helped NPs complete the process of transintestinal epithelial cell transport.

Multistrain probiotics use in main commercially cultured freshwater fish: a systematic review of evidence

Javier Fernando Melo-Bolivar et al.

Summary: This review examines the use of multistrain probiotics in commercial freshwater-cultured fish and their effects on growth parameters, survival after bacterial infection, and immune modulation. Studies show that multistrain probiotics can enhance fish growth performance and resistance to pathogenic bacteria, but more controlled experiments are needed to directly compare the efficacy of multistrain probiotics with monostrain probiotics.

Multi-strain probiotics: Functions, effectiveness and formulations for aquaculture applications

Puvaneswari Puvanasundram et al.

Summary: The use of multi-strain probiotics (MSP) in aquaculture has become a common practice over the last decade, providing more benefits to aquatic organisms through synergistic effects. The positive interrelationship among strains in MSP results in symbiosis and often leads to inhibition of pathogens and enhancement of host immunity. Various benefits of MSP include increased survival rate, improved growth parameters, and enhanced non-specific immunity in hosts. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms and interactions among strains in MSP formulations, in order to optimize their effectiveness in aquaculture practices.
