Early Solid Diet Supplementation Influences the Proteomics of Rumen Epithelium in Goat Kids

Yimin Zhuang et al.

Summary: It is known that solid diet supplementation can promote rumen development and metabolic function in young ruminants, but its effects on rumen epithelial proteome and metabolism remain unclear. This study used proteomic technology to analyze the expression of proteins in rumen epithelial tissues from goats fed different diet regimes. The results showed that solid diet significantly improved growth performance, enhanced rumen fermentation ability, and promoted epithelial papilla development. Proteome analysis revealed distinct differences in protein expression between the solid diet groups and the milk replacer only group. Solid diet supplementation activated various molecular functions in the epithelium, including protein binding and energy synthesis. Upregulated proteins were related to fatty acid metabolism and signal transduction pathways, while downregulated proteins were associated with carbohydrate digestion and absorption. Additionally, enzymes involved in ketone body synthesis in the rumen were activated. Overall, solid feed promoted rumen epithelial development by changing the expression of proteins involved in fatty acid metabolism, energy synthesis, and signal transduction, with the ketone body synthesis pathway being the most important activated pathway.

Review: Markers and proxies to monitor ruminal function and feed efficiency in young ruminants

L. Cheng et al.

Summary: Developing the rumen's function in young ruminants is crucial for improving feed efficiency, health, welfare, and performance. While markers like breath sulphide and methane emissions show potential for monitoring microbiota development, there is limited evidence for robust indicators of feed efficiency at this stage. Nitrogen isotopic discrimination based on plasma samples seems to be the most promising proxy for feed efficiency in young ruminants. Further research is needed to explore and refine potential proxies and markers for assessing ruminal function and feed efficiency in young ruminants, especially neonates.

Multiomics analysis reveals the presence of a microbiome in the gut of fetal lambs

Yanliang Bi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that there is a microbiome present in the prenatal fetal gut, mainly composed of bacteria from Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes phyla. Additionally, microbial metabolites and antibiotic resistance genes were also detected, indicating the presence of metabolically active microbiota and the potential transmission of antibiotic resistance genes from mother to fetus during gestation.

Impact of different feeding systems on cost-effectiveness and Eimeria spp. infections in Canarian goat kids

Alexandr Torres et al.

Summary: Different rearing strategies have varying impacts on the growth rate and Eimeria infection dynamics in Canarian goat kids. Traditional weaning resulted in the best growth rate, while artificial feeding and early weaning led to higher oocyst excretion. The economic analysis showed lower operating costs for early weaning and artificial feeding systems compared to traditional weaning, but preventive management strategies for coccidiosis outbreaks are crucial.

Dynamics of rumen gene expression, microbiome colonization, and their interplay in goats

Xiangyu Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of rumen functions, microbial colonization, and their interactions during the first 8 weeks of life in goats. The results showed that rumen development in the first phase is likely a programmed process rather than stimulated by feed and microbiome, while the shift in rumen metagenomes is likely regulated by both diet and host. The intensive functional correlations between rumen genes and the microbiome indicate that synergistic processes occur during early rumen development.

Microbiome analysis reveals gut microbiota alteration of early-weaned Yimeng black goats with the effect of milk replacer and age

Aoyun Li et al.

Summary: Both age and milk replacer play important roles in altering the gut microbiota of Yimeng black goats (YBGs). While the alpha diversity of gut microbiota did not change significantly with age, the taxonomic compositions showed significant changes. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria decreased and subsequently increased with age, contributing to the stability of the intestinal environment and diversity of intestinal functions.

Solid diet manipulates rumen epithelial microbiota and its interactions with host transcriptomic in young ruminants

Jianmin Chai et al.

Summary: Solid diet supplementation in early life stages of ruminants can improve rumen microbiota and tissue development, with a significant impact on both rumen content and epithelial microbiota. Solid diet, especially the accompanying neutral detergent fibre nutrients, plays a crucial role in influencing the rumen microbiota and epithelium gene expression. The association between host transcriptome and host phenotypes is strongly related to rumen epithelial microbiota and solid diet, highlighting the importance of proper rumen development through both microbial communities.

A survey of dairy goat kid-rearing practices on Canadian farms and their associations with self-reported farm performance

S. Belanger-Naud et al.

Summary: This survey study in Canadian commercial dairy goat farms found a wide variation in kid-rearing practices and farm performance, with colostrum and milk feeding management being closely associated with performance indicators. The study successfully grouped farms into three distinct categories (production-focused, longevity-focused, and low performance) based on self-reported performance levels, indicating different management styles on the farms. By targeting rearing practices associated with higher performance, advisory services could help improve management practices on Canadian dairy goat farms.

Rumen Fermentation, Digestive Enzyme Activity, and Bacteria Composition between Pre-Weaning and Post-Weaning Dairy Calves

Summary: Weaning is crucial for young ruminants, as it causes significant changes in rumen function, bacterial composition, and enzyme activity. Post-weaning calves showed a more complex rumen bacteria network, higher fermentation products, and microbial protein content, but lower digestive enzyme activity compared to pre-weaning calves. These findings highlight the importance of weaning on rumen function and provide valuable insights for calf feeding management.
