Comparative molecular cytogenetics in five species of stingless bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae)

Mara Garcia Tavares et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of microsatellite sequences and rDNA clusters in the chromosomes of five stingless bee species, revealing karyotypic diversity in terms of repetitive sequences. The findings provide new insights into the chromatin composition and rDNA cluster locations in these bee species, contributing to our understanding of karyotypic evolution in this tribe.

Making the Genome Huge: The Case of Triatoma delpontei, a Triatominae Species with More than 50% of Its Genome Full of Satellite DNA

Pablo Mora et al.

Summary: The genome of Triatoma delpontei, a species within Heteroptera, is two to three times larger than other Heteroptera genomes. An analysis of repetitive DNA sequences revealed that satellite DNA makes up more than half of the T. delpontei genome. These satellite DNA sequences have played a significant role in the evolution of Triatominae genomes.

Cytotaxonomy and karyotype evolution in Neotropical Meliponini (Hymenoptera: Apidae) inferred by chromosomal mapping of 18S rDNA and five microsatellites

Marina Souza Cunha et al.

Summary: The goal of this study was to investigate the chromosomal evolution of Neotropical Meliponini bees. By mapping 18S rDNA and five microsatellite markers in 33 bee species collected from different regions in Brazil, chromosomal rearrangements were identified. The microsatellite markers were useful in identifying Robertsonian fusion events that led to the decrease in chromosome number during the evolution of the Neotropical Meliponini clade.

Summary: The distribution pattern of microsatellites is a challenging problem in fish cytogenetics. Most species have similar patterns of the (GATA)(n) microsatellite in the histone genes and 5S rDNA carriers. However, there are chromosomal polymorphisms in specific species.

High chromosomal mobility of rDNA clusters in holocentric chromosomes of Triatominae, vectors of Chagas disease (Hemiptera-Reduviidae)

S. Pita et al.

Summary: The subfamily Triatominae, which includes more than 150 blood-sucking species, has stable chromosome numbers. Research has shown that the mobility of rDNA clusters has been common in the evolutionary history of this group, potentially affecting genetic recombination and species diversification.

Multiple heterochromatin diversification events in the genome of fungus-farming ants: insights from repetitive sequences

Gisele Amaro Teixeira et al.

Summary: A substantial portion of the eukaryotic genome includes repetitive DNA, which is important for stability, regulation, and structure. The genomes of fungus-farming ants have high structural rearrangement rates, making them an important group for studying the repetitive portion of ant genomes. Chromosomal banding studies and hybridization techniques were used to compare heterochromatin patterns in different clades of Attina ants. The results showed that GC-rich heterochromatin likely originated in the common ancestor of the two clades and underwent various changes throughout evolution. The repetitive sequences (GA)(15) and (TTAGG)(6) showed consistent patterns among species.

Panstrongylus noireaui, a remarkable new species of Triatominae (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) from Bolivia

Helcio R. Gil-Santana et al.

Summary: A new species, Panstrongylus noireaui sp. nov. from Bolivia, is described based on morphological and genetic features. It is morphologically similar to Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus but shows distinct chromosomal and molecular characteristics. Furthermore, the new species can be distinguished by specific features of the male genitalia. An updated key for the identification of Panstrongylus species is provided.

Wenxi Jiang et al.

Summary: A universal karyotyping nomenclature system based on oligo-FISH has been established for precise chromosome identification and comparative evolutionary studies in Avena species. This new system provides a powerful tool for describing genetic diversity, chromosomal rearrangements, and evolutionary relationships among Avena species through comparative cytogenetic and genomic approaches.

Satellitome Analysis of Rhodnius prolixus, One of the Main Chagas Disease Vector Species

Eugenia E. Montiel et al.

Summary: Rhodnius prolixus' satellite DNA accounts for 8% of the total genome, composed of 39 satDNA families, including four shared with Triatoma infestans, as well as telomeric and GATA repeats. The clustering analysis revealed that most abundant satDNA families configured several superclusters, indicating complexity in R. prolixus' satellitome, with the four most abundant satDNA families being composed by different subfamilies. Transcription analysis of satDNA families in different tissues showed that 33 out of 39 families are transcribed in four different patterns of expression.

Formal Assignation of the Kissing Bug Triatoma lecticularia (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) to the Genus Paratriatoma

Vinicius Fernandes de Paiva et al.

Summary: The relationship between the genus Paratriatoma and the paraphyletic genus Triatoma has been examined, with Triatoma lecticularia being proposed to be transferred to the genus Paratriatoma based on morphological and cytogenetic data. This results in a new combination: Paratriatoma lecticularia. The subfamily Triatominae includes insects that are vectors of Chagas disease, with species now assigned to the genera Triatoma and Paratriatoma.
