Changes in fasting patterns during Ramadan, and associated clinical outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes: A narrative review of epidemiological studies over the last 20 years

Mohamad M. Hassanein et al.

Summary: Research indicates that over two decades, individuals with type 2 diabetes choosing to fast during Ramadan have shown increasingly complex diabetes profiles, with longer disease duration, higher body mass index, and elevated pre-Ramadan glycated hemoglobin levels. Despite this, more than 85% of adults with type 2 diabetes still choose to fast, raising concerns about the increased risk of hypoglycemia and the importance of healthcare professionals providing appropriate guidance.

Impact of Ramadan Diurnal Intermittent Fasting on Hypoglycemic Events in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials and Observational Studies

Dana Abdelrahim et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the scientific evidence on hypoglycemic events (HE) occurrence among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) fasting during Ramadan, as well as the effects of different moderators on HE incidence. Results showed that non-sulfonylureas hypoglycemic medications were more effective in reducing the incidence of HE, with various factors such as sex, geographical location, body indicators, season, dietary behaviors, fasting duration, time since diagnosis, and pre-fasting education associated with experiencing HE during Ramadan.
