Construction of artificial periosteum with methacrylamide gelatin hydrogel-wharton's jelly based on stem cell recruitment and its application in bone tissue engineering

Wentao Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of periosteum plays a crucial role in bone fracture repair. An artificial periosteum, composed of biocompatible methacrylate gelatin for mechanical support, E7 peptide for bioactivity, and Wharton's jelly for biological activity support, was developed to recruit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and promote cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the G-E-W membrane effectively recruited BMSCs and promoted bone regeneration. Therefore, the artificial G-E-W membrane shows great potential in enhancing the efficiency of fracture and bone defect repair.

Periosteum and development of the tissue-engineered periosteum for guided bone regeneration

Wentao Zhang et al.

Summary: The periosteum plays a significant role in bone formation and regeneration by storing progenitor cells and acting as a source of growth factors. Tissue-engineered periosteum, produced using biomimetic methods, can significantly improve the efficacy of bone grafting and scaffold engineering. The development of bionic periosteum in tissue engineering aims to accelerate bone defect repair.

Bone marrow and periosteal skeletal stem/progenitor cells make distinct contributions to bone maintenance and repair

Elise C. Jeffery et al.

Summary: The contribution of skeletal stem/progenitor cells (SSCs) from bone marrow and periosteum to bone repair has been investigated. During steady-state conditions, new bone primarily arises from bone marrow SSCs. However, after bone injuries, different populations of SSCs play distinct roles in bone repair, with periosteal cells primarily involved in non-stabilized fracture repair.

Masquelet's induced membrane technique: Review of current concepts and future directions

Andrea I. Alford et al.

Summary: Masquelet's induced membrane technique (MIMT) is a surgical procedure for reconstructing segmental bone defects, showing promise for revolutionizing critical-sized bone defect repair with advantages over distraction osteogenesis (DO). However, MIMT's success in adults lags behind DO, and the mechanism by which the membrane supports bone graft union remains unclear.

Histological analysis of induced membranes in patients whose bone defects were treated with the Masquelet technique to identify factors affecting the vascularity of induced membranes

Takahiro Niikura et al.

Summary: Factors such as sex, patient age, smoking, diabetes mellitus, femur or tibia, duration of cement spacer placement, and antibiotic impregnation to the cement were found to have no significant impact on the vascularization of the induced membrane (IM). However, the vascularization of IM was reduced in patients who underwent free flap surgery compared to those who did not.

Assessment of the Bone Healing Process Mediated by Periosteum-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells' Secretome and a Xenogenic Bioceramic-An In Vivo Study in the Rabbit Critical Size Calvarial Defect Model

Mindaugas Pranskunas et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the functionality of secretome isolated from periosteum-derived MSCs in healing critical size calvarial bone defects in rabbits, showing that osteogenic-induced secretome enhanced new bone formation process and had the highest bone tissue formation. The findings suggest that MSC secretome, particularly from osteogenic-induced populations, may be an effective therapeutic approach to enhance bone tissue healing and regeneration.
