Channel modelling and characterization for mud pulse telemetry

Mengzhi Jia et al.

Summary: Mud pulse telemetry (MPT) is a low-cost borehole wireless communication scheme used in the oil drilling industry. A transmission model considering the effect of the boundary layer thickness and pipe materials has been proposed to overcome limitations in data transmission rate. The model's accuracy has been verified through experiments, and the channel characteristics have been analyzed. Countermeasures are proposed based on the model simulation results to tackle issues such as symbol timing offsets, carrier frequency offsets, frequency selective fading, and intersymbol interference.

Study on signal decomposition-based pump noise cancellation method for continuous-wave mud pulse telemetry

Simin Jiang et al.

Summary: Continuous mud pulse telemetry is a advanced downhole data transmission technology in measurement while drilling systems that often faces difficulties in decoding due to various noise interference, especially pump noise. To address this issue, a constant center frequency variational mode decomposition (CVMD) algorithm is proposed in this study, which can effectively denoise mud pulse signals and preserve useful information within the critical frequency band. The algorithm outperforms conventional filters and Kalman filter in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, mean square error, correlation with ideal signal, and applicability under unstable pump conditions. It has been successfully applied to the processing of real-field experimental data, providing technical support for continuous mud pulse downhole data transmission in harsh mud circulation environments.

Mathematical modeling and experimental investigation of a rotary valve generating sinusoidal pressure signals based on fan-arc-straight orifice

Nan Yang et al.

Summary: The optimization design of the rotary valve orifice in continuous-wave mud pulse telemetry enables the generation of highly similar sinusoidal pressure waves for high-speed and reliable transmission. CFD simulation studies and hydraulic system experiments confirm that the peak-to-peak value of the differential pressure is proportional to the square of the inlet flow, and an increase in axial clearances leads to a decrease in the peak-to-peak values.

Analysis of pressure wave signal generation in MPT: An integrated model and numerical simulation approach

Hu Han et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a numerical model based on CFD theory to simulate the generation and propagation of downhole pressure waves, and carries out the sensitivity analysis of parameters. The results show that the amplitude of pressure waves increases with the increase of displacement and density, but decreases sharply with the increase of gap height. Meanwhile, the vibration frequency and viscosity do not change the amplitude of pressure waves, but aggravate the propagation attenuation of pressure waves.

Noise Modeling and Deep Learning Noise Suppression of Mud Signal

Bo Yang et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the problem of noise suppression in Measurement While Drilling (MWD) systems. A noise modeling method based on probability distribution is proposed, which decomposes the mud channel noise into pump stroke noise, baseline drift noise, and Gaussian noise. Additionally, a mud signal denoising network (MSDnNet) based on a convolutional neural network is introduced, and a simulation comparison experiment is conducted to evaluate its performance. The simulation results demonstrate that MSDnNet can significantly improve the signal-to-noise ratio compared to traditional adaptive noise suppression algorithms.
