Experimental and statistical analysis of the flap gate energy loss and pressure fluctuation spatiotemporal characteristics of a mixed-flow pump device

Bowen Zhang et al.

Summary: A flap gate is a necessary device that cuts off water flow, reduces energy consumption, and ensures pump unit safety. The energy loss of the flap gate and pressure fluctuation of the pump device were investigated using a high-precision test rig. The results showed that the residual circulation at the pump section outlet was one of the main causes of energy loss for the flap gate. The influence of the flap gate on energy loss can be ignored when the cut-off angle reaches 60 degrees or above. The pressure fluctuation at the impeller and guide vane outlet with the flap fully open under multiple flow rates was primarily monitored.

Fangfang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a pump as turbine (PAT) unit in storage mode, where an effective parameterization method is used to control the geometric shape of the guide vane. The optimization strategy combines Fuzzy Logic (FL) with Genetic Algorithm (GA), and combines numerical simulation with experimental verification. The results show that the efficiency has significantly increased and the radial force has decreased, providing a new and effective optimization strategy for improving the matching relationship between the impeller and guide vane of turbine machineries.

Pressure pulsation reduction in the draft tube of pump turbine in turbine mode based on optimization design of runner blade trailing edge profile

Fangfang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an optimization method for reversible pump turbines, which achieves the minimum pressure pulsation by reconstructing the runner blade geometry and using the Genetic Algorithm combined with Fuzzy Logic. Numerical simulation and experimental verification show that the optimized unit has slightly improved efficiency and significantly reduced pressure pulsation intensity in the draft tube. Especially at small guide vane openings, the pressure pulsation performance of the optimized unit meets the actual engineering standards.

Investigation into cavitation damage potentiality using pressure pulsation phenomena in a low head Francis turbine for small hydropower schemes

Pankaj P. Gohil et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of cavitation on unsteady pressure pulsations in a low-head Francis turbine. The results showed that the submergence water level of the draft tube had a negligible effect on the dominating frequency under low-load and upper-part-load conditions, but the amplitude increased with the submergence of the head of the draft tube. Under overload conditions, the maximum amplitude occurred at the blade-passing frequency. The study also identified low-frequency high amplitudes in the draft tube. These findings suggest the potential for cavitation damage in low-head Francis runners under different operating conditions.

Summary: This study uses numerical methods to investigate the dynamic flow characteristics of pump-turbine during runaway, focusing on the time-frequency relationship of pressure pulsations and the characteristics of frequency components. The results show that the low-frequency components of pressure oscillations are universal in the entire flow passage, mainly caused by the temporal changing of flow rate.
