Desert Endemic Plants in Algeria: A Review on Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry, Polyphenolic Compounds and Pharmacological Activities

Hadia Hemmami et al.

Summary: In recent years, phenolic compounds have gained considerable attention due to their robust antioxidant capabilities, potential health benefits, wide variety of biological activities, and strong antioxidant qualities. This review focuses on saharian Algerian medicinal plants and their bioactivity, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their chemical composition and various studies confirming their impact on human health. The research identifies 34 desert plant species with potential preventive and therapeutic effects on neoplastic diseases through in vivo and in vitro studies, biological activity assessment, and clinical studies. Furthermore, polyphenolic compounds have been recognized as key components contributing to the health potential of endemic diseases and desert plants. It is important to update phytosanitary and pharmaceutical regulations in accordance with Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and promote sustainable use and development of plant products, given the increasing antioxidant potential of these plant species and the growing trade in herbal products from the Sahara region.

Seed Endophytes and Their Roles in Host Plant Stress Resistance

Wenqin Mao et al.

Summary: Seed endophytes are microorganisms that exist in the internal tissues of seeds. They can promote host plant growth and enhance stress resistance. The diversity of seed endophytes is lower than that of leaves, stems, and roots, but some core endophytes are kept in the seed. The most common endophytic bacteria are Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinomycetes, and Bacteroidetes, while the most common endophytic fungi are Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. The paper reviews the diversity of seed endophytes and their role in host plant stress resistance, and discusses some problems in their applications in agricultural production.

New analysis of the endemic vascular plants of Algeria, their diversity, distribution pattern and conservation status

Rachid Meddour et al.

Summary: This study provides a new analysis on strict-endemic vascular plant taxa in Algeria, discussing their taxonomic diversity, geographical distribution, and conservation status. Based on literature review and field observations, it indicates that there are currently 248 Algerian endemics, accounting for 6.3% of the total flora. The northern floristic regions are particularly rich in endemic species, with K1, K2, AS3, C1+C2, and O1 being the richest regions. The majority of the endemic plants have a narrow geographical distribution and a small percentage falls under legal protection and is included in protected areas.

Bacterial ACC deaminase: Insights into enzymology, biochemistry, genetics, and potential role in amelioration of environmental stress in crop plants

Mohammad Shahid et al.

Summary: Growth and productivity of crop plants worldwide are often adversely affected by stresses, both biotic and abiotic. Ethylene production in plants is induced by most stresses, which is detrimental to their growth and survival. Therefore, managing ethylene production in plants is becoming an attractive option for countering the negative effects on crop yield and productivity.

A holistic and sustainable approach linked to drought tolerance of Mediterranean crops

Maurizio Trovato et al.

Summary: The increase in temperatures and reduction in rainfalls caused by climate change are reducing crop yields worldwide. Biotechnological approaches to increase stress tolerance by increasing the content of abscisic acid (ABA) have been effective but often result in low productivity. Genetic modification of transcription factors or regulators of signaling cascades provide a promising alternative to increase crop yield under warmer conditions. A holistic approach involving different knowledge and perspectives is necessary, as well as ensuring the use of selected lines by small family farms through subsidized prices.

Similarities and differences in the rhizosphere biota among different ephemeral desert plants in Gurbantunggut Desert

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study compared the rhizosphere bacterial communities and functions of different ephemeral desert plants in Gurbantunggut Desert in western China using high-throughput sequencing techniques. The results showed that these plants had similar dominant bacterial phyla but significant differences in composition, structure, diversity, and functions. Additionally, closely related plants had more consistent rhizosphere bacterial communities, and predicted functions were correlated with dominant bacterial phyla. Overall, the rhizosphere bacterial communities of ephemeral desert plants show similarities based on differences to adapt to arid and semi-arid environments, highlighting the importance of plant-microorganism cooperation in this adaption process.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria for Sustainable Agricultural Production

Luana Alves de Andrade et al.

Summary: Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) promote plant growth and health through various mechanisms such as increased nutrient availability, phytohormone production, protection against pathogens, and reduction of diseases. PGPR also help plants withstand abiotic stresses and detoxify plants from heavy metals. PGPR are important in sustainable agriculture for reducing synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, promoting plant growth and enhancing soil quality.

Structural Characteristics and Assembly Mechanisms of Soil Microbial Communities under Water-Salt Gradients in Arid Regions

Guang Yang et al.

Summary: Exploring the structure and assembly mechanisms of arid soil microbial communities is crucial for understanding the ecological characteristics and promoting restoration of arid zone soils. This study used Illumina high-throughput sequencing to analyze the differences in soil microbial community structures under different water-salt gradients in the Lake Ebinur basin. The results showed variations in alpha diversity, pH correlations, co-occurrence network complexity, and assembly mechanisms across water-salt gradients, providing valuable insights for further research in arid zone soil microbiology.

Maria Jose Contreras et al.

Summary: Plant-microbiota interactions play a significant role in plant growth, health, and productivity. In this study, the composition of rhizobacterial community associated with plants from Antarctic and Atacama Desert was examined. The core microbiome identified in the rhizosphere included beneficial taxa that are associated with survival under harsh conditions. The functional predictions also aligned with the ability to withstand stressful environments. This study provides valuable information for the exploration of rhizospheric microorganisms in extreme conditions and their potential as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria.

Proteome and Physiological Characterization of Halotolerant Nodule Endophytes: The Case of Rahnella aquatilis and Serratia plymuthica

Giorgia Novello et al.

Summary: Bacterial endophytes isolated from nodules of pea and fava bean were evaluated for their beneficial activities and salt tolerance. Four strains of Rahnella aquatilis and three strains of Serratia plymuthica were selected. The proteome characterization of two high-performing strains revealed that the number of expressed proteins increased in the presence of salt, with up-regulation of stress response-related proteins and down-regulation of metabolism and flagellum structure-related proteins.

Rhizosphere element circling, multifunctionality, aboveground productivity and trade-offs are better predicted by rhizosphere rare taxa

Puchang Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of rhizosphere bacterial and fungal subcommunities on element cycling, multifunctionality, aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP), and trade-offs of multiple functions. The results showed that intercropping altered ecosystem functions, with trade-off intensity significantly decreased in intercropped Z. mays compared to sole Z. mays. The diversities and functions of bacterial and fungal communities significantly differed among subcommunities. Species changes in rare bacteria were strongly related to nitrogen-cycling multifunctionality, ANPP, and trade-off intensity, while species changes in rare fungi were strongly related to carbon-cycling and phosphorus-cycling multifunctionality. This research highlights the importance of rare rhizosphere microorganisms in predicting and regulating system functions, productivity, and trade-offs.
