Analytical model for solute transport in discrete fracture networks: 2D spatiotemporal solution with matrix diffusion

Mohamed Khafagy et al.

Summary: The study introduces a computationally efficient analytical network (AN) model for simulating solute transport in discrete fracture networks (DFNs). The AN model was verified to show excellent agreement with numerical models and investigated the sensitivity of mass sharing methods to dominant transport mechanisms. The model was found to be at least 97% more efficient than numerical models and provides a useful reference tool for verifying numerical dual-porosity fracture network simulations.

Modeling of solute transport in a fracture-matrix system with a three-dimensional discrete fracture network

Yingtao Hu et al.

Summary: This study models the fluid flow and solute transport mechanisms in fractured rocks using a numerical simulation workflow. The results demonstrate the significant influence of the rock matrix on transport behaviors, with sorption and decay processes playing an important role in solute migration. A higher matrix porosity enhances mass exchange and fracture networks with denser fractures promote better connection and mass exchange. These findings are critical for understanding the migration of radioactive nuclides and deep geological disposal of nuclear waste.

Combined Effect of Contact Area, Aperture Variation, and Fracture Connectivity on Fluid Flow through Three-Dimensional Rock Fracture Networks

Na Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined effect of contact area, aperture variation, and fracture connectivity on fluid flow through a fractured medium. The results show that the model with variable apertures provides more pronounced 3D preferential flow pathways compared to the model with parallel plates. The permeability of 3D DFNs depends on the contact area, aperture variation, fracture connectivity, and contact at fracture intersections within the network. Increasing fracture connectivity enhances permeability, while increasing contact at fracture intersections reduces permeability. A correlation and tortuosity factor are proposed to account for these effects.

Assessment of the high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) potential in naturally fractured geothermal reservoirs with a stochastic discrete fracture network model

Yonghui Huang et al.

Summary: High-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) is a cost-effective technology for storing energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the thermal losses in naturally fractured reservoirs need to be carefully considered. The presence of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) in fractured reservoirs can lead to increased thermal losses and lower thermal recovery efficiency, but the larger injectivity of fractured reservoirs may make them potential candidates for HT-ATES.

Effect of slippery boundary on solute transport in rough-walled rock fractures under different flow regimes

Jia-Qing Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of slippery boundary on solute transport in rough-walled rock fractures under different flow regimes. The results showed that the slippery boundary has a profound influence on both microscale and macroscale solute transport behaviors, with the influence becoming more significant with increasing hydraulic gradient and transition from Darcy to nonDarcian flow regimes. The study also highlighted the need for further research on the effect of slippery boundary in larger-scale fractured rock aquifers and the development of predictive models for complex geological environments.

Nonlinear fluid flow through three-dimensional rough fracture networks: Insights from 3D-printing, CT-scanning, and high-resolution numerical simulations

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The study investigated the nonlinear flow behavior of fluids through 3D discrete fracture networks, considering the effects of fracture number, surface roughness, and fracture aperture. The results showed that streamlines in DFNs become increasingly tortuous as fracture number and roughness increase, leading to stronger inertial effects and greater curvatures of hydraulic pressure-flow rate relations. Increasing fracture aperture and number provide more paths for fluid flow, increasing both viscous and inertial permeabilities.
