Summary: This study found that Cd can improve the heat resistance of the hyperaccumulator plant Sedum alfredii. Cd penetrates the guard cells, restores stomatal function, and mitigates water loss under heat stress. Additionally, Cd activates antioxidant enzymes, promotes phytohormone biosynthesis, and upregulates a series of genes, enhancing the heat resistance of S. alfredii.

Summary: Red mud (RM) and iron-salt-modified biochar (Fe/BC) are functional materials with significant attention in waste reutilization. This study synthesized and characterized RM/BC and Fe/BC, and analyzed their environmental behaviors with natural soil aging treatment. The results showed a decrease in Cd(II) adsorption capacity for both materials after aging. The main removal mechanisms were co-precipitation, chemical reduction, surface complexation, ion exchange, and electrostatic attraction.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising strategy for converting wet biomass wastes into carbon-condensed solid hydrochars. Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cow manure with grape marc and corn stover did not enhance solid yield or higher heating value synergistically, but it did increase the electrical conductivity of hydrochars. Hydrochars have higher fixed carbon content and lower H/C and O/C atomic ratios than their parent feedstocks, reducing their susceptibility to thermal degradation and decreasing the bioavailability of heavy metals. The land application of hydrochars could potentially reduce phosphorous run-off and eutrophication compared to raw manure.

Summary: Anaerobic mono- and co-digestion of coffee pulp, cattle manure, food waste, and dewatered sewage sludge were evaluated using biochemical methane potential tests. Mono-digestion of coffee pulp and food waste yielded higher methane yields compared to the co-digestion ratios examined, with no synergistic or antagonistic effects observed. Nine different kinetic models were compared, with cone and modified Gompertz models identified as best-fit for mono- and co-digestion of coffee pulp and cattle manure, and superimposed model for food waste and dewatered sewage sludge.

Summary: Metal oxide-modified biochar showed excellent adsorption performance in wastewater treatment. In this study, iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) oxide-modified biochar (BC-FM) was synthesized using rice straw biochar, and its adsorption process, removal effect, and mechanism of cadmium (Cd) adsorption in wastewater treatment were investigated. The results demonstrated that BC-FM had a significantly higher adsorption capacity for Cd compared to other modified biochars mentioned in the literature. The Cd adsorption by BC-FM followed a spontaneous chemical adsorption mechanism. Additionally, BC-FM exhibited good reusability and stability. Therefore, metal oxide-modified biochar can be an efficient adsorbent for treating Cd-contaminated wastewater.

Summary: This study focuses on the co-pyrolysis of sludge and biomass to produce biochar with solidification of heavy metals. The study investigates the synergistic coupling mechanism, surface functional groups, and pore structure characteristics of the co-pyrolytic biochar. It also examines the solidification characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals. The results show that co-pyrolysis prolongs the decomposition process and enhances the solidification effect of heavy metals, leading to a high-quality biochar with lower heavy metal risk.

Summary: This study investigated the lead and cadmium exposure in Barki rams and the beneficial effects of 4% dietary supplement of Nannochlorposis oculata (N. oculata) in improving performance, biochemical markers, and antioxidant activity. The results showed that lead and cadmium exposure led to lower weight gain and feed conversion ratio, as well as decreased thyroid hormone activity and biochemical markers. However, the dietary supplement of 4% N. oculata improved these parameters and reduced the endocrine disrupting effects of lead and cadmium.

Summary: The effect of oxygen on the removal of Cd(II) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) has been investigated. It was found that Cd(II) adsorbed on the surface of NZVI can be reduced to Cd(0) under anaerobic conditions. However, the presence of oxygen significantly decreases the Cd(II) removal efficiency and inhibits Cd(II) reduction due to the thickened surface gamma-FeOOH layer. Moreover, oxygen intrusion corrodes Cd(0) and leads to the leaching of Cd(II) ions.

The research applied Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Artificial Intelligent (AI) modeling tools such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) for modeling and optimization. The results showed that all models had high determination coefficients, indicating their accuracy. However, the performance error indices revealed that the ANFIS model had the best prediction accuracy. The validated optimization results confirmed the reliability of the models.
