Microbiome Analysis of Sugarcane Juices and Biofilms from Louisiana Raw Sugar Factories

Yunci Qi et al.

Summary: Amplicon-based sequencing was utilized to address long-ignored gaps in microbiological knowledge about the diversity of microbes present in processing streams at Louisiana sugarcane raw sugar factories. These results support an emerging model where diverse organisms contribute to sugarcane juice degradation, help to contextualize microbial contamination problems faced by raw sugar factories, and will guide future studies on biocontrol measures to mitigate sucrose losses and operational challenges due to exopolysaccharide production.

Exploring the antibacterial potential of plant extracts and essential oils against Bacillus thermophilus in beet sugar for enhanced sucrose retention: a comparative assessment and implications

Mohamed M. Yousef et al.

Summary: This study aimed to reduce sucrose losses in sugar production by screening potential antibacterial agents to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria on beets. The screening revealed that extracts from Geranium gruinum, Datura stramonium, and Mentha spicata showed strong inhibition against a dominant thermophilic bacteria. Treatment with these extracts resulted in the formation of new recombinant microorganisms, confirming their antibacterial effects. The main bioactive compounds identified were cis-iso pulegone and hexadecanoic acid. Therefore, the application of these plant extracts and oils can effectively minimize sucrose reduction during sugar production.

Biological toxicity assessment of carbamate pesticides using bacterial and plant bioassays: An in-vitro approach

Mohammad Shahid et al.

Summary: Recent agricultural practices heavily rely on agrochemicals and pesticides to protect crops, but their indiscriminate use can have severe negative impacts on the environment and crop productivity. This study evaluated the toxicity of carbamate pesticides on soil bacteria and plants, finding that these pesticides had detrimental effects on both bacterial and plant growth and survival.

Removal of bacterial dextran in sugarcane juice by Talaromyces minioluteus dextranase expressed constitutively in Pichia pastoris

Duniesky Martinez et al.

Summary: The gene construct encoding Talaromyces minioluteus dextranase (r-TmDEX) was expressed in Pichia pastoris with an increase in transgene dosage resulting in higher extracellular yield of the enzyme. The optimal activity of the N-glycosylated r-TmDEX was observed at pH 4.5-5.5 and temperature 50-60 degrees C, while the addition of sucrose as a stabilizer maintained enzyme activity under harsh conditions. The use of the P. pastoris pGAP-based expression system proved to be suitable for large-scale production of dextranase and its application in dextran removal.
